I recall a film with Jai Shanker, where he plays a blind Muslim guy. I recall perfect performance from the late actor. I'd appreciate it if any of you guys got any info, especially the title of this film.

I'll check it out. Thanks a lot Raju. I would not say that I am a fan. But of late I find that he is actually a good actor, given a good script and director. I saw him in Veetukku Veedu, and was amazed to see him handling comedy with an ease of a proffesional comedian. Not anybody can do comedy.
Not much information is available in the internet. I wish I could find books. I know a person or two who have encyclopaedic knowledge of the Tamil cinema of old.
I wonder why you asked about the 75-78 years. It is, to my belief, an importaint era of Tamil films. To me, that's when the golden age of tamil cinema ended (beginning in 1952, the year of Parasakhti). In 78, MGR joined politics and Shivaji was beginning (apart from bloating physicaly) to do bad films and not delivering proper performance. It was also during this period the young took the mantle from the old. Rajini and Kamal was emerging as hot young stars. SP Bala and Jesudass could be heard more often than TMS or PB Sreenivos. Ilayaraja came and gave MSV a bad time. Second level heroes like Jai Shanker, Ravichandran and AVM Rajan were not getting interesting offers to sustain their hero status. Jai Shanker was still playing hero up to somewhere before he agreed to play villain to Rajini in Murattu Kalai.
During that years he was playing some action roles, occasionally family subjects. I am yet to learn more about his. I am looking around to see some definitive website on old Tamil films. If you happen to see any, please let me know.
Again thanks.

hii
i find it hard to get any info on jaisankar on the net. i asked for 75-78 bcs as a little kid i remember some great tunes from that era from jaisankar hits but just cant get them bcs i dont know names. i have some hits of his from 60's...great. i like jaisankar films from 60's....different.
i thought MGR started in politics much earlier. he was elected to the dmk post around 62-63 as treasurer. i am not much into films from that era...yet. i am still stuck in the 60's films but will soon reach the 70's. i am travelling through Thailand at the moment so really cant check up on any films but i have whole tamil film history lists at home(london). i am now sure the film u asked abt was 'kirakkum merkum'
bye

Yes, Wish this thread continues on Jai.
I am a great fan of his, of even his 'cowboy movies' which I thought were 'realistic' given the difficulties of customizing to Indian conditins...

Jai Shankar is the "JAMES BOND" of Tamil cinema. As some one mentioned in this thread apart form playing Bond kind of roles, Jai Shankar is brilliant in comedy too. In those days, MGR & Jai Shankar was the heroes who appeared to be at natural ease with comedy as well. I liked the movie where Jai Shankar was paired up with Jamuna. “Kutty” Padmini acted as the daughter of Jai-Jamuna pair. Even though it belonged to the family drama genre this movie was a blockbuster. Could anyone please refresh my memory on the name of that movie?

Jai Shankar has created an own niche for himself in the history of Tamil cinema. From a Bond hero to a villain to a character artiste, Jai Shankar was perfect to fit the bill. Unlike some “over-actors” during that era, Jai Shankar’s acting was more subtle and natural. AVM Saravanan once described Jai Shankar as a "simple, uncomplicated human being and a perfect gentleman to the core from top to bottom". A highly talented but underrated actor, Jai Shankar is one of those heroes who was consumed by the enormity of MGR. Isn’t it an irony that Jai Shankar himself rated MGR as his “most favourite actor of his times“.

Dear Kavitha,
Nice mailing. I am a great admirer of jai movies. but even i find it surprisng that he rated MGR as his most favorite actor. It is a measure of his greatness. You should only remember what the 'great' MGR did to Jai in Vandikkaran Magan. If you want can tell me where his DVDs are available, please mail to me at kumaresh70@rediffmail.com

Kavita - the movie with Jai, Jamuna and Kutty Padmini is 'Kuzhandaiyum Daivamum' a great hit of mid sixties from AVM

Thanks for the info, Kumar! Yeah, now I rememeber the title of the movie - "Kuzhandaiyum Daivamum". It was a good movie where Jai acted differently in a family genre! I like Jai shanker - whether action role or family drama kinda role or villain roles or character roles he gives a touch of subtlety to his characters!

back again after a few years!!!!!!!!
last year(feb-march 2003) i went on a 7 week tamil cinema 'tour' of madras and madurai. i took loads of photos of street mural paintings of stars and posters (not film posters). in madurai in south maasi street i came across a poster in memory of Jaisankar's 900th day death memory!!!! at the bottom there was an address. it was nearby. it was a printing press on the same street. the woman who was there informed me that it was indeed her husband who had printed the poster and could not believe that someone from UK could be a big fan of JS. i arranged to meet them that evening.
the man was a big JS fan as a kid and after college went to see him in madras. JS told him to go back to madurai and finish his studies. he did and returned and hug around 'working' for JS till he got married!!!! JS came to the wedding. i was invited to their home and saw the wedding photos. got some gossips abt JS as well as his sons address in madras.
