I doubt whether Kamal is very keen on selecting average/worst songs in his movies
Past 10 years to my knowledge only Indian and Devar Magan songs had been superhit.I think he is very careful, that nobody should say the movie is hit because of songs. This is not good for him his producers and his fans.

  You are somewhat right.
  This ego was there with some directors, for example, Maniratnam, Bharathiraja etc etc..
  These people never got full credit to their work because every time 50% or more credit went to Ilayaraja.
  So they dropped Raja and went for other music directors.
  But they still maintained the songs to be very good.
  But Kamal has got one more problem. He expects we Tamilians are very intelligent to understand and enjoy the music which suits the film.
  Just imagine 'Vetrivizha' without its songs.
  Yes, in the past 10 years Kamal had very few hit songs.
  As a Kamal fan, I buy his movie audio the very first day.
  But as you mentioned, in the past 10 years most of them disappointed me.

  To some extent yes, but, the reason half the people go to seethe movie is to see Kamal acting, so you can't say that they are totally the only reason why his movies become superhits.
