being a tamilian we are left with not much of choice when coming to quality top 2 actors. being in my late thirties, i grew in the period of sivaji and mgr. in the 80's we have kamal and rajni creeping in. though kamal was the darling during the 80's and early 90's just like madhavan now,age caught with him. though rajni had the bad guy and second roles, his strong believe in philosophy and knowing his strength help to stay in people heart even today. rajni compared to kamal is not a excellent character player but he has studied himself well and paced himselg well chosing idealistic films and movies that live a message in a movie goer. padayappa, muthu were good examples. songs, acting, excellent screenplay were given good dosage. kamal being a good character role player did some good shots in comdies like avvai shanmugi but later started doing experimental movies like hai ram who has one of the worse screenplay otherwise it was excellent attempt. latedly alavandan again showed poor screenplay and story buildup. i think those around kamal is not giving open and frank suggestions to correct him. thats the problem with indian cinema, they shake head to top directors and actors. i think rajni has a good think team, thats why his film are successful. his deep trust in god helps in always.

i really agree with you.. simply superactor
got carried away by his surrounding and never
got the pulse of audience tastes. probably
he is a good scientist in indian cinema with
less success.being a legend in tamil cinema,
i wonder how is still unable to understand the
expectations, tastes,latest trend amoung
the dynamic audience.we are not here to cry
or dull headed while watching a movie.
little bit of emotions ,comedies,songs,good
photography,fight ,interesting twist and turns
which will make a movie to be successful.
he is a dominant character and never even
bothered to give equal importance to support
artists and wants to take the entire credit
but in full vain. he cannot be a successful
hero till his era. he is always secondary
in front of audience when compared to super star.
rajni knows very well what will be accepted well
amoung the audience. thats why he is termd as
a all class hero cum super star till date.
eventhough i am being a kamal fanatic, i am forced to accept the proverb"empty vessel makes
much noise" .kamal should be only an actor
and should be handled by directors like
shanker,ks ravikumar,manirathnam,vikraman etc
with good fast pace screen play and good
picturisation.
thenali,avvaishanmugi,indian are best example.

I think Superstar Rajini and Kamal are not made to compare. Both have their own nuances as to their appearance and image. Rajini is mass entertainer and Kamal is a class one. You can't just evaluate the prophesies of their acting talent. We cannot also adjudge them on the basis of colour, physical built etc.
Basically myself is a Rajini fan. I always think what makes me to remain as a Rajini fan!! Inspite of no.of heroes with noticeable talent, why again we wait for Rajini's new release. Why such things doesn't happens with other heroes?
I then realised Rajini is in a class of his own. His shaking body language, trigerring dialogue delivery and many more attributes make him an universal superhero.
No doubt Kamal is class actor with his own charismatic appearance. One can't deny it.

Now, Kamal has established himself as a class actor & Rajini as a mass actor. But if u all have a look at their earlier day movies (late 70's & early 80's) u'll be surprised to find that in those days Rajini selected roles which provided him with immense scope for acting (e.g: MULLUM MALARTUM, AVARGAL, JOHNNY, NETTRIKKAN, THILLUMULLU etc) whereas apart from movies like MEENDIM KOKILA, MOONDRAMPIRAI Kamal concentrated in masala movies like SAKALAKALAVALLAVAN, GURU, SAVAAL etc. Only in mid 80's they changed track & Rajini started concentrating to establish himself as a Super Star (precisely after NALLAVANUKKU NALLAVAN) & Kamal as a Super actor.
But one thing. In all those movies with acting potential Rajini has surely done justice to his charactors. Take for instance:
Ramanathan, the sadistic husband: AVARGAL
Vidyasagar, the barber : JOHNNY
Chakravarthy, the industrialist
with a weakness for women :NETTRIKKAN
Indran , the conman :THILLUMULLU
Manickam, the industrialist :NALLAVANUKKU
NALLAVAN
Can u imagine any other actors in these characters? Would they have breathed life into these characters as Rajini did?

What about
Alex Pandian in Moondru Mugam
The character in Engeyo Keta Kural
Murali in Illamai Oonjalu Adirakathu
Ganesh in Priya
Balu in Thambikku Entha OOru
Raja in Padikathavan
All this also displays his acting skills
I sometimes feel tamil cinema lost a classic villian after Rajini made the drift towards hero roles

The characters in Moondru Mudichchu, Naan Sigappu Manithan, 16 VayathinilE and Annaamalai were also done well by Rajini.
