Why Should Sri Lankan Tamils not watch Indian Movies!

I hear this raving comments from most of the Srilankan Tamils of how they speak the pure Tamil and how the have preserved the culture of Tamil. Now they also claim that they had come to Srilanka before the Singhalese did so, as far as they are concerned they have been there for 2000 years.
Now my question is - What did they do all that 2000 years there? Why did they not develop any Tamil literature? What did they do to contribute to the Tamil language? There exists no Srilankan Tamil culture – if some ignorant Singhalese asks them about Tamil culture the proud Eelam nationalist never fail to point out Madurai, Sangam, Cholas & Pandyas – These are the cultures of Tamilians in India – How about Srilanka? It’s rather sad that they shamelessly indulge in culture robbery.
Even in modern times why don't they have movies for themselves - why should they watch Indian-Tamil movies? What ever said & done at the end of the day - Indians are different from the Srilankan Tamils in every sense.
After all being a Srilankan Tamil if they have all this nationalist feeling for Eelam being an Indian-Tamil there is no doubt they will be a hard die Indian nationalist.
Sri Lankan Tamils will not be accepted socially in India. The fact is that they get discriminated in Tamil Nadu perhaps because Sri Lankan Tamils stand in the bottom of the hierarchy system in India?
So, I really do not understand why don’t they have a little pride for themselves and as a first step stop watching any Indian movies?

What ever problem you Sri Lankan Tamils have, resolve it with your singhalese brothers. Do not attempt to drag Indian Tamils into this. I am a Tamilian, though not brought up in TamilNadu, I beleive Indian Tamils need to celebrate their identity as an Indian more than their Tamil roots. Refrain from dragging TN into your problems, the last time you asked for a bloody military conflict, the IPKF broke the LTTE's back, while their intention was to keep a fragile peace in the island.
I spoke to an Indian Colonel, also a Tamil, who served under the IPKF flag, and he does tell me of atrocities committed by the army and looting of electronics and gold.
Notwithstanding their shameless acts, I would like to say that India wants a sovereign and peaceful SriLanka, we have seen the repercussions of a failed truce.

hi bharat wasi,
to conduct peace talks we need a neutral judge to decide of things are equal both tamils and sihalese. of course we have norway, but india is our next door neighbour, and knows our sufferings better than the norwegian people. we want india to help in that way, cuz india is the most powerful country in south east asia.if u people dosent have any humanity, its fine with us.

and about movies. we watch and critsize every tamil movie, thinking that we have the rights to do so, as we also are tamils. Some of these indian movies are shot in srilanka, some talked about the sufferings of lankan tamils, and nearly all the movies are released on the same date as released in india. so the producers take us mind b4 making a movie. we give money to watch movie, and if it dosent satisfy us, we have all the rights to critisize it bad.
and we have a very small market in srilanka. 18 million is our population. and less than 20% of that is tamilians. with that kind of a market we cant make movies with good produtional values.
of course there are sinhala movies, which usualy gets screened in any fim festivals. they are praised more than the usual indian commercial movies. ask maniratnam, when he was here, he did prise many local movies.

I'm a Sinhala person who has lot of Tamil Friends in Colombo. Many of my tamil friends (9 of 'em) do have a life style similer to Tamil nadu Tamils. I would rather say it is a mixture of sinhala and Jaffna tamil and Indian tamil. The thing is, many tamils in Jafna still have a old life styles, many of them are poor, very much vilage life. Tamil nadu in this case is rapidly developing states in India. Unlike Jafna people did not come out to Colombo (city) to mix their culture. because of the war and the LTTE ruling. LTTE do not let people go away from their borders because they have to have people to rule. Sinhalese are the first people to be in Sri Lanka. But, we had Tamild kings because some of our Sinhala kings used to marry women from India. But majority always was Sinhalese. Tamils were there too. Today, many tamils we see in Sri lanka are came during the British ruling. For Example, the leader of the LTTE, Prabhakaran is also from Tamil Nadu. He is not a 100% Sri Lankan tamil at all. If you see, many Jaffna tamils live in Canada, UK, Aus, and many other countries watch Indian movies, eat Indian food, dress like indian. Only they don't give credits for india. It is very much true. Many Sri Lankan tamil leaders hate India. This led Prabhakaran to kill Rajive Gandhi. Tamil People do have a power. This power is misused by the LTTE. Many Tamils forced to forget their Indian blood relation just because LTTE do not get along with INDIA or INDIAN Gov after killing Rajive Gandhi. Many tamils even don't like to talk about this matter. I have been to Tamil Nadu, its a huge state. Now, there they have things you can see Tamil history. If you go to Jaffna Sri Lanka you will be able to see Sinhala Budhists history (left overs after LTTE destroying many of Budhdha temples). But, we all have (sinhala, tamil, muslim, and anyother---)the right to live in Sri Lanka. Would LTTE be able to bring this kind of peace? Just think, many of the politic familes in Sinhala side live in developed countries. Sri Lanka is one of the vacation spot for them. What do you think about LTTE side? Only Prabhakaran lives in Vanni, because if he's shows up he will be jailed. Where do u think many other tamil leaders live? Sri Lanka always had problems with tamils in the history. Ravana, kalinga Maga, and Elara all these kings destroyed our sinhala civilization. According to budhism, nothing stays forever. Everything will change, shade, and will be gone. Sri Lanka will not stay forever, it will change too. Someone could say that Sri Lanka will be destrouyed and Sinhala civilization will be gone one day! It could happen too my friend. Till then Fair Well to you all.

I feel criticising tamil movies is good, infact it will induce the industry to come out of better quality, In India after Hindi film Industry, Tamil film industry stands next.... Ya... you sinhalese either tamils or sinhala speaking people you do have right to criticize since you pay and watch those movies... Yet dont forget, it is you iniability that you cant produce good tamil movies in your country and you are watching ours.

your commnet is good.
but fading the Srilanka and Sinhala culture won't to be happened. we must all try to protect it because it is our mother land and where-else can we go.
yes i like to say tamils were always a bother to us. they did so many good things , but all the same they did bad things.
but we must live with them brotherly and we try to forget the hatred and try to give them our love.
actually Jaffna tamils are lived for many centuries in srilanka and tamils in hill country came a century ago.
so Jaffna tamils have more rights than hill country tamils.
any way we all want peace.

Hi I am Sam , A Malaysian Indian Tamil.
About the comments on watching Tamil movies from India - I think we should think about the economic influence non Indians have on the Indians. All we need to do is to make sure that every Indian is well off economically regardless of the type of contribution / support we get. Why such squabbles on pathetic issues. Not all Eelam Tamils will regard ancient Tamilagam history as theirs, the fact that they want an independent land itself proves it.

hi ,
Srinivas.Iyer from india,
We are all PROUD TAMIL's regardless of nationality . Concentrate on similarities and not on differences. One can be a patriot and at the same time be loyal to his roots. One must not confuse patrotism with love and pride for one's mother tongue. This is the most meaningless and unneccessary debate i have come across.
