"when u get the inspiration from the crux of the story, and u make a movie completely different from the original, with only the baseline remaining the same, then i certainly call it INSPIRED. (eg) Avvai Shanmugi from Mrs.Doubtfire"
kdot, if you have seen mrs doubtfire, theres a scene, wherein robin williams, in his nanny garb, is shown as attending to household chores, cleaning, washing and stuff, and shaking his/her leg too, to the tune of aerosmith's 'dude looks like a lady', which plays in the background. theres the 'velai velai' song in avvai shanmughi, wherein kamal does ditto. whats that for you, inspiration or plagiarism? of course, kamal hasn't done the screenplay here. but when his fans attribute everything good about his movies to him alone, ignoring the 'puppet directors'(ravikumar, suresh krissna, sunder and many more), they'll have to blame him for the flaws too, na? and more over, when kamal himself directed the hindi remake chachi 420, the same scenes were incorporated. again, what was that? plagiarism or inspiration?
in soorasamharam, sergei eisenstein's celebrated odessa steps sequence from 'battleship potemkin' was recreated. in fact, ace hollywood director brian de palma has given his own version of the scene in 'the untouchables'. de palma openly said said it was a tribute to the great master, eisenstein. i believe i've seen someone discussing this in forumhub sometime back too. any ways, for me, it makes a difference when people come out in the open about their inspiration. though the idea remains someone else's, it's better to accept it rather than gloating on it as if it's his or her own property and even snubbing the original, as mentioned here about kamal's 'surefire' remark. i believe even mani ratnam had accepted that the song sequence in anjali was flicked from spielberg's 'E.T' he has even mentioned in interviews that agni natchatram was inspired by the scripts of salim-javed.
(what he hasn't accepted is the fact that the scene in nayagan, where kamal and janakaraj con the cops by tagging salt sacks to smuggled goods and dumping in it in sea, is flicked/inspired from sergio leone's 'once upon a time in america. hee hee)

Kamal is a great actor, no doubt about it. Rakesh is right about the fact that his movies are inspired by Western movies, but he is wrong when he says that Kamal is not a good actor. The fact of the matter is that Kamal has acted wonderfully in these movies whether the films were inspired or not. I also disagree with some of you bashing Karthik for no good reason. It's true that his films today are just getting repetitive and tired but look at some of the films of our great actors today - Mohanlal, Mammooty, even Kamal, etc.,. Their present films are no better. I would place Karthik right behind Kamal in the late 80's to mid 90's. And he has done more than 5 memorable roles, for any of you who watch his films - like Mouna Raagam, Agni Natchathriam, Varusham 16, Vanna Kanavugal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Gopura Vasalile, Gokulathil Seethai, Pooveli, etc.,. If Karthik wasn't any good, why was he in the films of Mani Ratnam (who has directed him twice), Fazil, telugu director Vamsi, Priyadarshan, Sridhar, Bharathiraja, Agathiyan, etc.,? And, let's not forget, Karthik is the only Tamil actor who has worked under the direction of the only two national-award winning directors in tamil cinema history - Agathiyan and B.Lenin. These, among others, directors saw great talent in Karthik and utilised it brilliantly. In my opinion, he was a much better actor than Muthuraman.

Kudos to Gabriel for painstakingly analysing Kamal's movies and comparing them with the "Xeroxed" movies he acted/made.
So what Gabriel? What's the issue here? Does copying make one lesser talented/intelligent?
Remember, many many everyday equipment/instruments are simply copied and modified (or to use your words Xeroxed) to suit the local culture/flavor.
Can you honestly say Kamal is NOT talented? Isnt his acting talent something commendable? What about his talents in singing, dancing, directing, script writing? What about his creativity? Movies like Alavanthan,Hey Ram may not have been blockbusters but hey, they show his novelty and effort where no other Indian actor is willing to risk.
Remember, for someone who has been acting for the past 40-odd years, he has been and STILL is going strong in the Tamil movie scenes.
If your argument is that he plagiarises, well, let it be.
Let it be.
Let it be.
If your argument is he gets the credit for the movies, well, that's Kamal's talent again.
When discussing a movie, what strikes you most is what you mention/remark first. If the movie had great songs, then songs (and singers)are the first praised.
No point in harping that the directors or actors are no praised bucause its the viewers opinion that matters. So dont blame the singers, music directors for getting the bouquets.
Because that's what you are doing! Blaming Kamal for the successful movies he has made.

Mr.Gabriel, why are U wasting Ur time in telling something to these people. These guys are all 'naan pudicha muyalukku moonu kaal ' type. They know all abt world cinema and also abt our hasan's Xerox copies ,but won't accept it.They are after all Kamal fans,so they will behave in the same way as their thalaivar does. They won't accept criticisms but will utter kamal mantra indefinetely. It seems that Mr.Joe (or Milton) is the head for these guys.
