Nayagan is the best movie, he directed.
But im not impressed with his movies after Bombay. Maybe im tasteless. Alaipaayuthae was one of the worst. They said this was a different love story.

In my book, Iruvar is the best MR movie till date. After Iruvar, my vote goes to Nayagan.

Kavitha,
You're one of the few who actually think that Iruvar was a good movie. So do I; I think this movie was a daring step for MR as this kind of story line had never been explored by any other film maker. I especially liked the song scene "Udal Mannukku,Uyir Thamizhukku". The cinematography and the use of black and white made that scene alone one of the best song sequences in Tamil movie history.

Maniratnam is a highly over rated director. His films offer highly simplistic solutions to compound problems (Roja, Bombay etc). Now, coming to his other flims :
1.Nayagan- It glorified use of violence via the character of Velu Naicker. Also, remake of Godfather.
2.Alaipayuthe - A love story lacking depth.
2.Agni Nakshatram - Purely commercial.
3.Thalapathi- Succumbed to rajini's image.

4.Anjali & Mouna ragam were plausible.
5. Iruvar - Confused view of the dravidian movement.
6.Thiruda Thiruda - No storyline whatsoever.
Mani ratnam owes a lot of success to his technicians (P.C.Sriram, Madhu ambat etc.,) & A.R.Rahman. The comedy in is movies is downright hopless. Classic eg. is agni nakshatram.
He glorified use of violence

Radha,
U seem to only talk of "collections" always.
Kavitha,
seems U are a simbu + maniratnam fan. Strange combi.
Coming to aayidha ezhutthu, surya's character is not properly etched. He does not even bother about the man who shot him. All he wants is to stand in elction & win. The message that youngsters should join politics is not told in a convincing manner.

Thalapathy and Nayagan were the best ones .... It's really hard to make big superstars fit to a different storyline, forgetting the image factor. And I think no one except ManiRatnam could have been better to use the legends the way he did ... The other movies were exceptional too, but these 2 at the top ..
