Filmmaker in Focus: Kamal Haasan (12/01/2001)
30th International Film Festival Rotterdam PRESS RELEASE January 12, 2001
Filmmaker in Focus: Kamal Haasan, Southern Star from India
The Indian director Kamal Haasan, superstar in his own land, has been selected as Filmmaker in Focus by the International Film Festival Rotterdam along with Roy Andersson from Sweden and the Swiss-French director Anne-Marie Miéville. The festival pays a tribute to Kamal Haasan as one of the most important film personalities in the contemporary Indian cinema. Roy Andersson, Anne-Marie Miéville and Kamal Haasan are expected to visit the Rotterdam Festival.
Kamal Haasan, key figure in the Tamil film industry based in Chennai (Madras) started to appear in films at the age of three, forty-three years ago. Kamal developed a specific acting style and stayed in focus for decades. So far he acted in about two hundred films. For many of those he also wrote the script, for some he wrote dialogues. He did choreography, sang songs or wrote lyrics for famous song and dance film sequences. Lately Kamal Haasan also produces and directs.
Although he collaborated with certain directors before, he did not ask for credits at the time, so his first direction actually concerned the comedy CHACHI 420, a remake of MRS DOUBTFIRE in which he also plays the main role. But the film that distinguished him as a director from the rest of the mainstream community is HEY! RAM, India’s latest nomination for the Academy Award. Kamal Haasan combines the Indian film style known as parallel or art cinema with the style used in mainstream or popular cinema, especially known for it’s song and dance sequences. Haasan tried to surmount the chasm between these styles, and made a good, exciting film by exploring both Indian cinema experiences. HEY! RAM is a very Indian film, not only because of the story – which concerns the time of the Indian freedom movement – but in its aesthetics too. At the same time it is a very universal film, appealing to a broad audience.
Haasan’s Filmmaker in Focus-programme is only a small sample of his diverse work. In PUSHPAK, made in 1988, he plays the main role and keeps the story alive without using any dialogue at all. For THEVAR MAGAN made in 1995, he wrote the script, as well as for KURUDIPPUNAL made in the same year, and plays the lead roles in both. For HEY! RAM, made in 2000, he is the script-writer, the director and main actor. His company Raajkamal Films International took care of the production of this film and for the two previous mentioned as well. HEY! RAM is quite daring: it shows a very different perspective on the known facts about the time of Gandhi’s struggle and it has a very trustful and passionate husband-wife relationship, not seen much in Indian films. The film provoked quite violent reactions in certain parts of the country, especially in Calcutta.
