  my vote goes to the both of them! shanker sings well for fast beat songs.. and has a melodious voice.. unnikrishnan is well based for singing slow melodious songs.. both of their voices are so enchantin,,, but ppl! dunt forget about the great SPB! his songs are ever wonderful!!

  Unnikrishnan and shankar are both good singers and have different voices and both of them are very talented. They have their own individual style. When you listen to unni he has a sweet soft voice which is distinct and nice and to sowmya who said that unni sings like a female you have got your facts wrong cos he don’t sing lyke a girl if u listen to one of his songs which is my favourite one by him the one from the film dumm dumm dumm the song “unperai” which he sings with sadhna sargam is sooooo nice and his voice is beautiful. Shankar has a deep nice voice too and he really sings his fast songs well and there are lots of his songs which r great lyke “taniyeh tanan taniyeh” from rhythm , “enne solla pohgira” from kandukondein kandukondein .   I think Shankar is the best in the crop of singers we have today. He has a very high degree of flexibility and modulation in his voice. Also has very good range and good control over pitch. I believe he is extremely talented in singing.
  
  Enna solla pogirai (from Kandukondein kandukondein), Thalaattum kaattre vaa (Poovellaam un vasam), Thaniye thannathaniye (from Rhythm), thom karuvil irunthom (star), varaaha nadikkarai ooram (Sangamam), uppu karuvadu (mudhalvan) are some of the great songs sung by Shankar. I am sure there will many more great songs from Shankar in the future.
  
  Unni does have a good voice but does not have strong modulation in his voice. His abiliites in switching swiftly between pitches (shruthi) and handling varied ranges is also not that high when compared to Shankar.
  
  Of course SPB is a GREAAAT singer. But let us confine this dicussion only to Shankar and Unni.

  my vote is for Unnikrishnan, though my favourite is Hariharan.
  
  Shankar is no doubt a great singer. Its just that I feel Unnik has a more melodius voice.

  I guess everyone agrees that SPB is the best of them all. Thank God for that.
  
  Shankar is more versatile, and more suitable for cinema songs. Unni Krishnan need to pump in more masculinity in his voice, but looking at the present heroes like Vijay and Prasanth who lacks this element, Unni doesn't really have to do much.

  I must tell you that we have the same taste in the songs of Shankar Mahadevan, all the songs you mentioned are big, big, big favorites of mine, too! I think I can safely say some of his best! I am learning Tamil and do not understand many of the words in the songs but Sangamam is one of my all-time favorites in any language and one of the Rahman's I listen to the most. As soon as varaaha nadikkarai ooram begins it is like the first time I ever heard it, the excitement and surprise have not gone away yet.
  
  SPB is my most favorites. He can do anything! However, Shankar can thrill me in a way few singers ever have. No one can doubt his talent and creativity, not to mention his highly adventurous spirit! As for Unni Krishnan - his voice is amazing, he can be spell binding.
  
  Why not just talk about how lucky we are to have these voices in our lives instead of saying one is better than the other? They all have their own style and they are all very talented. We could talk about our various favorites that they have sung.

  Both Unni and Shankar are wonderful. Unni is for Melodies where as Shankar can handle everything. In my opinion i consider "yenna solla pogiraai" is a melody. Unni krishnan can sing soft songs but cannot handle songs that require the male punch in them.
  Shankar, on the other hand, has everything. Apart from the number of hits in Tamil from Shankar, a song that really gets me moving is the song "koyi kahe kehta rahe" from Dil chahta hey.
  I am sure Unni would not have come any close to the performance displayed in that song by Shankar.
  SO IT IS SHANKAR ALL THE WAY>>>>>.........

  The two singers shine on their own. Unnikrishnan has a subtle approach which is very soothing. And there is no singer who has the strenght in voice like Shankar Mahadevan. He sings from the bottom of his stomach. There is power in their voice.

  can't actually ask a question such as who is the best, since people do not hold the same opinion as other and their taste and the way of persueing things would differ. One person might like high beat song therefore she would go for the singer who sings such a song, and another person who likes slow songs, would go for the singer who sings such a song.
  
  Unnikrishnan and Shankar Mahadevan are both indeed good, they have their unique way of singing.
  
  For me I prefer listening to Unnikrishnan's songs than Shankar Mahadevan, its not because Shankar Mahadevan is a bad singer, its because I love listening to Unnikrishnan's songs.
  
  could listen to Unnikrishnan's songs at anytime, good moods and in bad moods and in sad moods. Especially his Carnatic, Its really really really nice...
  The words can't describe why I like listening to Unnikrishnan's songs. Doesn't matter what song it is I listen to it as long as its Unnikrishnan's voice.
  Unnikrishnan's songs are good, no one can deny that.

No offence..but.. like someone mentioned above Unii is favourite of girls because he lacks masculinity in his voice and has some girlish vocal in his songs…most girls like soft songs… so they like Unni’s song.. Guys like kick-high-pitch song so they like Shankar M.D ..countries like Canada sponsors Shankar to host his own music concert……and Shankar came with A.R Rahman and Hariharan…..He has been in 3 concerts so far in countries like Canada..how many has Unnikrishnan done so far in Canada?? 0 so this should explain who the fan favourite is. Sorry to all the Unni fans….but this is the reality. Shankar will rule from now on in tamil music… his arrival was little late but he will hang in here for long… A perspective from a strong fan of Shankar MD.
