I thought Ajith will make a difference in tamil movies..and i kept telling everyone to watch out for him..
But he choses his roles carelessly playing the same over the top rowdy retard..he is so fat now adays.. his potential are lost in these types of role...Too bad..I don't care if his movies are still hits ( last i heard he had consistent flops) and people still like him and his movies..
From an artistic and quality perspective his movies are rubbish. i think he is multi talented but he is uninspired...
I guess Vikram is the next thing in Thamilz cinema..a guy who spent a lot of time in mental hospital to play the role in Sethu, a guy who built up his body for dhill and stood under the sun to darken his skin for KAsi, A guy who gets into his roles that he plays..His choice of movie is good and the fact that he rejected several roles that could made him famous faster on the basis that those roles do pose a challenge, uninspired and silly stories is something to admired.
Kinda reminds me of some the great Hollywood actors- De Niro - who took a job as a taxi driver to play his role in the taxi driver
Edward Norton- who put 50 lbs of muscles to play a Neo-Nazi and lost all of his muscle by strict diet to play a depressed loser in fight club.
and many others
It means they are serious actors not just for the showbiz and glamour of cinema..

I never exactly watched any of these youngsters of late. I've seen a clip of two of all of them in Astro, and find myself agreeing to you all. Ajith, Vijay and Prasanth are big waste of screentime. Prabhu Deva and Mathavan can survive because they seem to be able to handle comedy well. In fact, of all the youngsters, I can only watch Prabhu Deva in the whole movie since I knew I can expect some comedic moments.
I caught few scenes of Vikram in both Sethu and Kasi, and Surya in Nanda. Surya's performance seemed to be aided by script and direction. The same can be said of Vikram in Sethu. For Kasi, he picked up from the original actor in the original movie (It came in Malayalam first - I forgot the movie title), so again he was inspired. But it is a very positive move. That will make him a great actor one day (see arguements about Vikram and Kamal in other thread), but it might dampen his survival. He need to do an action or masala film once in a while, to capture the mass audiences. Kamal did that and still do.
I suppose this is what Ajith tried to do. To alternate between story-oriented and plain action films. He probably won the hearts of female audience, so to win the male audience he seeks to to films like Dheena and Red or even Amarkalam. All these might be a marketing move, but it seemed to backfire. Without the skills and charisma of Kamal and Rajini, survival may be pretty short.
It is also a mistake to copy the early two. Rajini and Kamal picked up elements of Shivaji's acting (hell, everybody did at that time) and went on to develop something of their own. Kamal discovered greater lesson in subtleness through Balachander, while the latter and the likes of SP Muthuraman, and Panchu Arunachalam has been largely been influential in bringing out the so called 'style' and performance out of Rajini. But these young actors (I exclude Vikram here) are more content to do what the directors (who are mostly not so knowledgable about acting) want or simply copy Kamal (as in the case of Vijay - an imperfect copycat). Ajith is a confused imitator of Kamal and Rajini. He got to stop this or just go downhill.
