srk,
The movie is about a guy who has sexual weakness. He is left free in his village, cause people fear his power. Basically not a bad character, except for his weakness for opposite sex.
The climax is a such a worth climax to watch, all the residents of village join together and force the hero (Kal nayak or villainic hero), to drown himself. They do not resort to physical violence, the climax is very emotional, where the hero slowly and willingly drowns and kills himself and the whole village watches him with sadness. They villagers then nuture and bring up his children (That is assumption).
Hero's character is good, except for his weakness, which he finds he cant overcome.
VERY GOOD MOVIE.

This film is a must see film, it was one of those films that doesn't really leave you. I actually remember the main character as being a cruel and quite horrible to his wife, perhaps I got it worng .It was well written and simply beautiful ,if you appreciate those types of films, no glamour , no laughter.

Well, one thing I can say about that film is that after watching it, I decided that Mahendran was the greatest Indian director ever. It's a pity this guy has stopped directing now. By the way I thought the heroine's name was Ashwini.

"By the way I thought the heroine's name
was Ashwini."<<<
yeah right.
Vijayan was a tamil actor in later 70s ...he did not make a great career in
tamil cine world.
I remember one movie...cast...vijayan, radhika, sudhakar and rathi...forgot the name
of the movie....STORY WAS AWFUL...but songs simply great.
One famous song in that movie is.
"Ayiram, malargale malarungal.
Amuda geetham paadungal, aadungal,
kadal vedam paadungal...
Neengalo naangalo nerungi vande
solungal, selungal"
One more movie was ...(Damn! Again forgot the name!) vijayan with shobha.
Movie's story was dumb, songs bearable!
Any body knows any movies of vijayan?
Btw, does anyone know who acted in
"ORU OODAPOO KAN SIMITUGIRADU"
What is the story about? Who acted? Is it worth watching?
Also wanna know bout
"BHUVANA ORU KELVI KURI"
srk,
Kamal's character in "chippikul muthu" is that of an innocent lad, rather a dumb
but good person at heart. He marries a widow, and the rest of the story is about
how she makes a man out of him.
The movie was a dubbed version of telugu movie "Swathi muthyam"
Its more an art film than a commercial masala movie.

shakthi, damm, the story of 'chippikul muthu'is similar to multi-oscar winner(6) forrest gump, although it had more political theme behind it.for a change hollywood is inspired from kamal's movie.I know,it was dubbed from telugu like "sagara sangamam",althogh I have seen the later,I am looking forward to "chippikul muthu".
"bhuvana oru kelvikuri",my bet, its a sp muthuram film,I have heard my mom talkin about it..i will ask her for more info

"Forrest Gump" inspired from "Swathi Muthyam"!!!! I sincerely hope Robert Zemeckis, not even in his wildest dreams, come across this line of thought. Poor chap will have the shocker of his life. :-)

Shakthi,
The heroine of 'Udiri Pookkal' is Aswini, not Rupa. I agree, they have some resemblence.

but kamal once remaked that'There is a lot of Similarity between 'Forrest Gump' and 'Swati Muthyam'. Will someone say that they copied it from our film?' Anybody listening?

forest gump.....chippikkul muthu
i have not seen the kamal film but the writer of forest gump(the book in 1986) was asked how she got the story idea. she said that she was travelling through India (in 1985ish) and got the idea. could it not be possible that she saw the film then and was inspired to write forest gump. i really wanna see kamal film.
boovana oru kelvikuri....sivakumar,patapat? and rajni's first role as hero. great songs but sorry not seen the film.
aayiram malarkale is 'niram maaratha pookkal'

raju,hehe,nice joke.....
forrest gump was written by winston groom in 1986 and he has written several novels based on the character...it is almost impossible to believe that swati muthyam or India had on influence on him..in fact i remember he was inflenced by his friend or someone from alabama(the movie is famous from alabama-english)..I wonder where did u read that quote?

Uthiri Pookal
The main actor/hero/villain is Vijayan, who is a village head man, panchayat president. He is a sadist, tortures his sickly wife Ashwini and cast aspirations on her relationship with a doctor Sharat babu, who once was in love with her. Even his own younger brother hates this guy. Vijayan has an eye on her beutiful sister-in-law madhumalini and wants to marry her. But she is in love with a village school teacher. The story goes like how the villagers after having borne the atrocities finally make him commit suicide by drowning in the river. The movie stands out for the direction of Mahendran, and the subtle performance of Vijayan as a polished sadist villain and Ashwini. There are lot of supporting actors like Sundar, Sharat babu, who have given an excellent performance. It was quite a differnt movie in that era.
There are also other good movies from mahendran
Nenjathai killadhe (Debut for suhasini)
Mullu Malarum (Rajni in a very good role)
Jhonny

Infact, all Mahendran films are good. They are very realistic, subtle, unusual story setting and paradoxical.
Uthiri pookkal got famous because of the kids (Kaja Sheriff and Anu) but the film is fantastic. Direction of some of the sequences (scenes) is amazing. Check out the fight scene between Sharath babu and Vijian on the banks of the river…The Panchajayat scenes and of course, the climax. The climax has literally no dialogue but very dramatic and satisfying.
Jhonny's first half was very well done. I love the 'barber' Rajini character and especially his introduction. Watch for raja BGM score for this introduction, it’s a great piece. Deepa's character is very interesting. The saree-buying scene talks so much about Mahendran storytelling and the exposition of the character. Sridevi performance was also good.
Nenjathai Killathey is also good film. The metaphorical treatment of Suhasini's jogging as theme of the movie is very interesting.
His films are deep with well-built storyline. So, if you like pure drama check all his films.

Look at what Manirathnam says about this movie in an interview.
http://hinduonnet.com/thehindu/fr/2002/04/12/stories/2002041201050100.htm
Buddhadeb Dasgupta: Indian cinema has given us great masters.
Why did Tamil cinema have to wait so long to get a Mani Ratnam for
national recognition? Also, isn't it time to do something more lasting,
bring more sensitivity to your images?
Manirathnam: National recognition has nothing to do with what we do here but with
what people see. The fact that they were not open to seeing ``16
Vayadhinilae'' can't be held against the maker of the film.
It's just that ``Roja'' and ``Bombay'' dealt with issues closer to them
... got translated into Hindi. If I get anywhere near what Mahendran
did in ``Udhiri Pookkal'' I'll be a happy man. Sensitive images...? I'm
trying...all the time... Let me see if one day...

KRK:
Thanks for the article. Mani you too!!! Mani is also de-emphasizing the story!!! It should be exactly opposite to what he is saying. Theme is vehicle for the story not the other way around. When have a portrait over a theme with no argument the film is bound to fail no matter how much the cinematography, film aesthetics etc...are good.
