well,we talk of "plagiarism" whenever a kamal's film is discussed in some thread or other.
so,letz keep aside all our prefixed notions, throw all the ideas we had so far and letz be a clean slate and discuss this topic CLICHE VS PLAGIARISM.
what is more irritating to u?cliche or plagiarism?
if u watch some movie and thoroughly enjoy the movie and after a few days ,when u hear that the movie is "plagiarised",will ur opinion towards the movie change??
which movie u rate high(or low, lower) a cliched one or a plagiarised one??
is it better to repeat these cliches ,rather than "inspiring" or "plagiarising" from another movie??
and what is the difference between "inspiration" and "plagiarism"??
and then most importantly, what is CLICHE and WHAT IS PLAGIARISM???
WHATZ THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO??
IS CLICHE SOME SORT OF A PLAGIARSM??
AND ALSO U CAN TELL SOME GOOD EXAMPLES OF CLICHES IN HOLLYWOOD MOVIES.
(WELL,TELLING THE CLICHES FROM TAMIL MOVIES WILL BECOME A CLICHE ,SINCE IT IS TOLD TOO OFTEN)
P.S: DONT THINK THAT THIS THREAD IS STARTED BY SOME KAMAL FANATIC WHO WANT TO PROVE SOMETHING.AS I SAID EARLIER ,THIS IS A NEW THREAD AND I DONT CARRY MY OLD VIEWSANY MORE. HOPE U ALSO DO THE SAME.
SO,LETZ DISCUSS

I'm not sure if I can identify myself with a performance in a cliche scene. But a performance in a plagiarised scene may "wow" me down. In that sense, I don't think there's any point in comparing the two. It will be a foregone conclusion that plagiarised scene will be better and the performance in that will be appreciated better.
But if it comes to the irritation, I think plagiarism would irritate me the most because I'm a writer too. I may tolerate somebody doing a cliche scene., but I would not tolerate a plagiarism of my work under any circumstances, even if the outcome is far better than what my original work.

I would think that cliches pertain more to stereo type roles, characters, scenes etc that have become an expected feature in movies, books, tv programmes. Cliche scenes like love scenes, songs, lovers running around in the park, fight scenes (including mandatory breaking of clay pots and total carnage of vegetable stands. God have mercy!) have become a dangerous staple of Tamil movies. I say 'dangerous' because now there is a certain degree of expectancy that all Tamil movies should include two or more of the above mentioned cliches in Tamil movies.
Plagiarism is just plain cutting and pasting.
Are Tamil movie makers 'plagiarising'? One thing I have noticed is that the written word is very guarded and that plagiarism within this field is very much frowned upon. But the movie-world seems to be less harsh. Perhaps it's because most movie makers don't take the 'cut & paste' approach. Or perhaps there is an unspoken rule that story lines can be adopted with enough changes made for it to be overlooked. And this happens every where:
Magnificent Seven - Seven Samurais.
Le Cage a Folle - Birdcage
The Ring (Japan, then USA)
Captain Prabakharan - Free Willy (Just joking!)
Is Kamal plagiarising? Some will say yes, other will say no. Yes, he has used story lines from other movies; but the movie world has been doing this ever since film was invented. Charles Chaplin movies inspired Buster Keaton films, which inspired Harold Lloyd films, which inspired laurel & Hardy movies, etc, etc righ up until the last scene in Michael Mathana Kamaraj.
I personally feel that it is about time Tamil movies break away from the cliches and look to other film themes, even from other countries. While Hollywood is making the Matrix and Lord of the Rings, we still have to put up with dream scenes, market fight scenes, villians pulling women's saris, etc. Kudos for the people who made Kandukonean Kandukonean, Kuruthi Poonal and Thenali. These movies which had themes from other movies will eventually (hopefully!!) lead to a desire for more varied stories like Hey Ram, Aalavanthaan, Vetri Kodi kattu, House Full.
Last, but not least, Tamil cinema should (re) take the risk of doing more historical movies. Tamil history is rich with great movie material.
