Cine goer,
Some of the movies you listed are not historical movies .Historical movie should be based on some history, not just Raaja-Raani kathai.
vanjikottai vaaliban,Konjum salankai and mannathi mannan are not historical movies, but just Raaja-raani kathai.
Regarding sivagangai seemai,It was produced by Kannadasan .He wrote the dialogue also .SSR is the hero.

Saraswathi sabatham will come under mythological movies even though the some characters are as kings/queens etc. Karnan is also loosely a mythological, being based on Mahabharatha times.
In case mythologicals are accepted in this thread, the best would undoubtedly be Thiruvilayaadal.
In the raaja-raani kathai, it is always a pleasure to watch MGR's movies. My personal favurites are Adimai Penn, Aaiyraththil oruvan, Mahadevi, Chakravarthi thirumagan and Arasa Kattalai. All superb entertainers and some great kaththi chandai sequences.

As sweet Nothing Said I enjoyed many MGR raja-raani movies which are defenitely entertainable.MGR's face is fit for Raja Vesham and he is too good in Sword fighting and Kampu chandai .But he lacks in 'Kampeeram' where Nadigar Thilagam is Incomparable.Only one scene is enough .
In the movie Karnan ,When Karnan go for 'Vil viththai' contest with Arjuna ,Nadigar thilagam demonstrated a walk .OHHHHHHH! even the the LION will beg him for 'Kampeeram' and Style ..You can see the whole theatre will Clap when Nadigar Thilagam walks with his unmatched Style.

I would say both MGR and Shivaji had thrir pluses fro doing a raja role. While Shivaji had Gambeeram and Voice (Simmakkuralon), and dialogue delivery, acting,
MGR had the look of a prince unlike Shivaji who had the look of a King ( do u see the difference). MGR had the agility in physical action, had in reality the actual stuff which is the expertise that real kings and princes should have which is Sword fighting, MGR suited romantic prince roles much more than shivaji!
Nobody could have suited the romantic role as in Aayirathil Oruvan (ofcourse not as a prince or king)!
Hence both had their pluses!

As sweetlad says, MGR had some special chemistry on screen especially in the raaja-rani stories. Although I love Sivaji for his great dialogue delivery and Gambeeram and acting skills, I would prefer a MGR starrer for raaja-rani stories.
What about others like Gemini ganesan for Raaja rani stories? What do you think of his portrayal of such roles?
I must say PS Veerappa and MN Nambiar were great as the villains in any raaja-rani film.

Talking of MGR's historicals, I'm reminded of Madurai Veeran.
He was dashingly handsome and Padmini was like a goddess. They made a great pair in that movie.

Before Marudanayagam, Kamal's dream movie was 'Ponniyin Selvan '. Any idea why that project never materialised?

Historical movies,
1. Harichandra
2. Bharathi -
new movie the director and the produce have to be appriciated to give this movie in this time . Nowadays it is difficult to c historical movies
3. Iruvar -with some modifications

The main problem with Ponniyin Selvan would be it's length. It will definitely take atleast 2 parts to finish the whole story through films. May be the makers felt that the audience is not yet ready for such a "known" two-part film. However no doubt that it is a rich story which must be made a film some day.

Who ever makes kalki's novel as movies should be really applauded. I have my doubts if the real feelings would be depicted picture perfect.
I wish some directors try
PONNIYIN SELVAN
PAARTHIBAN KANAVU
SIVAGAMIYIN SABADAM
ETC
