  Both are very talented. They differ very much in the way they approach the subject. While Shankar solely concentrates film box office success, MR goes little further than just thinking of box office. Right now, MR is definitely ahead of Shankar in terms of film quality and treatment. But Shankar's ideas and spark might help him more... let us wait for shankar to give "real" film before we run full comparison.

  Great! There is no neccesity to have social view on every film. Mani is not MGR or something nor he is Shankar. What a film needs is great story, Social message is not a great story, nor it is story if it filled with fact. Every story has to be treated uniquely and it has to take its own course. So the social views question raised by you is irrelevant.
  
  Roja is amazingly constructed script based on Sathyavaan Savithri who bring her husband back from YAMAN mouth. Here to ROJA bring back her HUSBAND from TERRORIST (YAMAN). What social message did Sathyavaan Savithri contain?. It is value and determination of DharamaPathini. Same is true to ROJA. At the sametime the ROJA shows us the life of terrorists and shows they have hear too while they are on a MISSION. Same as YAMAN whose mission(TAKING LIFE) is moved by Savithri, thereby you can infer YAMAN has a heart. Please do not throw utlimate derision without even understanding the movie.
  
  SHANKAR'S MOVIES HAD NO FALSE GIMMICKS.ALL WERE 100% PURE GIMMICKS YET EFFECTIVE GIMMICKS.
  What ever he wanted to convey it has been directly conveyed.

  but here my comment, Do not expect all Director to direct a movie is same way. Alas! then boy meets girls story would vanished long time back. The key to the enjoying movie is it unique treatment. so be happy that Shankar and Mani directs films so differently.

  My friend, If you really want to know about it, please go to library and read what happened or look out for some documentary about it. What Mani wanted to say is--What happened to Arvind, Manish and Twins after Masjid was demolished. Why? Because Bomaby is a movie about THE FAMILY (Arvind, Manish and Twins) not about demolistion of the mosque.
  
  Speilberg has not yet directed a RELATIONSHIP based story. Does that mean he won't are he cannot?. No, he just likes the High-Concept blockbuster.

  Shankar gives mega-budget and over produced movies with unrelastic solutions to problems..
  
  Yeah mudhalvan, it was over three overs long. The film had maybe one hour of intense scenes..but the rest are pure crap.. The manisha relation was nonsense..Manisha talent obviously wasted here..She had nothing to do with the theme of the movie..It just made the movie long and dragging..
  
  The movie also have really dumb scenes and so many holes in the story..\
  
  1- The gunfight..what the hell was that?? one scene manisha and arjun were dancing, suddenly the fields were filled with 20 thugs with AK-47 and grenades..and the coconut trees exploding...yeah right..
  
  2- In the movie Arjun wanted everyone arrested..how is this gonna help run a government..
  
  3- In the hindi version, nakay he wanted to do the MAtrix effect during the fight scenes..with 30 cameras..haha..Hollywood used over 200 cameras to create the Matrix effects. If u cannot use the technology to the maximum capabilities don't use that technolgy..Don't try to pull Hollywood stunts when u cannot afford it or do not have the technology to do it.

  Anyways what i am trying to say is that shankar is not a well though out director..he has too many flaws..while technically and visually his films are ahead of other tamil films, he has so many flaws in every one of his films..
  
  Unlike mainratnam, where his movies are alomst flawless.. and well thought out with script focusing on the theme of the movie. The women chacracters are integrated into the story and usually his movies are shorter than the average tamil movies without the movie from side tracking of the main story..

  I have no problem with Shankar..He has visions and visually his movies are better that most other tamil movies..here the technical crew must be credited and the fact that he gets the funding..
  
  However, his problems starts when he wants to show and do everything possible..(probably to attract as much audience as possible)..He has serious themes in his movies but at the end they become cartoonish and quite silly..(Maybe thats what he wants?)
  
  I think Mudhalvan would have worked well if it was just 2 hours..
  
  Mani on the other hand handles films well..Like u said he keeps it simple..I remember my English teacher saying "Keep it Simple, Stupid".. If the story and production are simple, then there are less chances of mistakes, holes in the story and confusion"

  Mani is the best.Shankar lacks the versatility of Mani's screenplay and direction.Give Shankar Rs 10 crores,he would give a hit.Give him Rs 1 crore and tell him to make a movie,it would be a flop.Screenplay and and charcter portrail are mani's strenght whersa Shakar's strenght lies in Huge sets,graphics and thousands of extra actors.
