Does K Balachander deserve the title of "IyakuNar Thilagam"? I think the best director in Tamil so far was Balu Mahendra.

  K.B may be one among good directors but he is not deserved for Iyakkunar sigaram title as there are very good directors better than him are available.
  Consider the following directors and their movies.
  1)Sridhar:Kalyanaparisu, Kadhalikka Neramillai, Vennira Aadai, Nenjam Marappathillai, Nenjil Or Aalayam, Sivantha mann, Thenrale Ennai thodu, Ilamai Oonjalaadukirathu etc.
  2)A.P.Naagarajan: Thiruvilayadal, Melnattu marumagal, Agathiyar, Saraswathi sabatham, Thiruvarutchelvar etc.
  3)B.R.Banthulu: Aayirathil oruvan, Kappalottiya Thamizhan, Veerapandiya kattabomman, Karnan etc.
  4)Mahendran:Uthiripookal, Nandu, Mullum malarum, Kai kodukkum kai, Metti etc.
  5)S.S.Vaasan:Chandralekha, Avvaiyar etc.
  6)Bheemsingh:Palum pazhamum,Paasamalar, Silanerangalil sila manithargal etc.
  7)Manirathnam:Mounaraagam, Roja, Bombay, Naayagan, Kannathil muththamittaal etc.
  8)Bharathirajaa:16 vayathinile, Sigappu rojakkal, Muthal mariyaathai,Kizhakku seemaiyile etc.
  9)K.S.Gopalakrishnan: Kai koduththa theivam, Karpagam, Pesum theivam etc.
  10)Balu Mahendra: Veedu, Moondram pirai etc.
  K.B.s films like Thanneer...Thanneer, Unnal mudiyum thambi, Sindhu bairavi etc can be bracketed in this category but they form a small percentage of his films. His films also based on 2 or 3 themes like 2 wives:Nool veli, Sindhu Bhairavi, Munru mudichu etc. About a girl taking responsibility to run her family:Arangetram, Aval oru thodarkathai, Manthil uruthi vendum. etc. Films like Punnahai mannan, Vaaname Ellai etc carry nothing. Some of his films carried controversies: Aboorva raagangal, Moondru mudichu Duet etc. Just because he introduced Kamal, Rajni and directed more than 100 films he cannot be considered greater than the above mentioned directors. But definitely he should be considered along with these directors after them.

  Manthiravathy... yeah...those who r all in ur list are best directors...nobody can deny it. But coming to the point of considering KB as 'Iyakkunar Sigaram', itz a honour given to him for his remarkable contribution to the film industry. Nobody have any rights to ask his contributions to the cine industry. 'IYAKKUNAR SIGARAM' is just a title to honour him yaar. If we call Kannadasan as 'Kaviyarasu' is that means no body else are big kavingnars?! If some people call actor satyaraj as 'Puratchi Tamizhan', then does it mean others are non-tamilians?! Like that, 'Iyakkunar Sigaram' is a title awarded to KB to honour him. Thats all. Really hez a nice director. If we says Balu Mahendra is the best camera man, does it means Cameramen like PCShriram, Ashokkumar are all not good cameramen?!

  I don't say anything about his 'Pattam'. In an earlier posting, one has said that Director Mahendran may come close to KB and Dir. Balu Mahendra has directed films of same themes (2 wives) and should not be compared to KB etc. etc. Just to disagree with them I posted the top directors of Tamil filmdom with their movies and mentioned KB too has directed films of same themes. I watch movies of all directors not only the directors mentioned in that post but also Masaala Raman (sorry! SPM), RamaNarayanan(stopped Ve.Sekar. K.S.Ravikumar, SureshKrishna. (None of these directors is called as 'Iyakkunar Pallam').
  I love to watch KB's films and he is one among the best. Thats all to say.

  Sorry there is a misunderstanding. As I mentioned in my last post nobody is called as 'Iyakkunar Pallam' but one of the top director can be called as 'Iyakkunar sigaram'. KB might have been deserved for a title like that. But the meaning of Sigaram should not point him. We call Sathyaraj 'Puratchi Thamizhan', but the reasons are not known; Vijayakanth is called as 'Puratchi Kalaignan'. Anybody knows what kind of puratchi they have done (Sorry for the digression). In that sense KB can be given such a title. But he is not the best to have 'Sigaram' thats what I wanted to mention.
