Wish there had been some other actress in her place. She was conspicuously odd for the role.

Dear Thamizhthatha,
Ash fitted like THE missing jigsaw piece.
To begin with the role required the person who is so flooring in her looks that the most powerful man in the state is to find it irresistible. To show a beauty that swayed the Tamilpolitik (much like the cliched phrase about Cleopatra's nose), I cant think of anybody else.
Coming to her acting : her portrayal ranges from a tomboy to someone who is enjoying the company of power is amazing to say the least.
In fact she is outstanding in the scene in thr cliff where she plays with the depths of Anandan's affection for her.
I personally consider it to be the best debut perfomance in Tamil cinema i a looong time right after Shoba in 'Oru Nizhal Nijamagiradhu'.

Aishwarya Rai is beautiful, no doubt, but she is so artificial. She is a natural beauty, but there is nothing natural about the way she carries herself. If she conducts herself normally and not as if she is ready for a photo session always, she will be the best. One has to let go, be natural and not suppress oneself just because she has to look beautiful and give a smile always. Isn't it so unnatural and boring? I prefer the naughty, Jyotika and Kajol types though they may not be very beautiful. Their behaviour makes them more beautiful than anything else. It is not just the face.
Sridhar cum Sarath... if you are reading this message, i know you will not agree with my comment on Jyotika. Isn't it so ? (Smiles).

Agreed with Prabhu ram,BTW Aish's performance in the Rituparno ghosh's off-beat 'Choker bali'(Eye sore),a celluloid adaptation Tagore's novel is getting rave reviews. In that film she has played Binodhini,a character who refuses to accept that ,the death of her husband makes her sexless creature.

Aishwarya is the PERFECT beauty who is fit to be on POSTERS... but no good for action... her acting sucks... why does she smile so fake?

I don't think aishwarya rai was a misfit for Iruvar. According to the story aishwarya rai plays the role of Jayalaitha. To me, her face has some kind of resemblence with Jayalalitha of the early 70's.

I thought aishwarya rai was GREAT in this movie. She was so good that it was hard to believe the same actress played Pushpa and the movie actress. I also liked her smooth and understated but adorable dancing. True, her character was somewhat of a mystery in terms of history and motivation, but that was due to the script, not the actress. If anything, the lead actor was hard to believe as a heart-throb - but hey, I'm an American!
