What next for Rajnikant?

A quarter century and more in the film industry and 151 films old. Rajnikant, the Muthu (pearl) of Tamil cinema, suddenly finds himself at the crossroads. A flop film, stillborn political ambition and now the Cauvery row.
A man who hasn’t made a false move in the past 25 years, a man whom his fans idolise, a man who always knows how to strike a chord with the masses, seems to be groping in the dark. The hype notwithstanding, his latest Baba did not light up the screen.
Actually, Rajni had everything going for him smoothly for the launch of a successful political career: the Tamil tradition of stars becoming politicians, a solid film career, a huge fan following and charisma that few could match. But the lukewarm response to Baba put paid to his political ambitions. For now, perhaps.
As if these twin blows were not sufficient, his advice to the Tamil film industry not to go ahead with the October 12 rally on the Cauvery issue, only boomeranged. The industry saw red and almost dubbed him an outsider.
Rajni, originally a Maharashtrian from Karnataka who found his feet in Tamil Nadu, is facing the biggest dilemma of his life. The most loved and sought after hero of the Tamil film industry seemed to acquire the taint of a villain overnight — thanks to the film industry. And he buckled and gave his support to the rally, provided it didn’t turn bloody.
This is not the first time that Rajni is facing the wrath of the film industry. The last time round, Karnataka was incensed with him and Kamal Haasan for paying a courtesy call on Jayalalithaa who was on a fast for Cauvery water in Chennai some years ago. Karnataka then boycotted his and Kamal’s films. They relented only after the two superstars gave a detailed explanation.
The hero now stands isolated after his years of contribution to the Tamil film industry. There is still hope. Like in the film Baba which doesn’t flash ‘The End’ but says ‘To Be Continued’

Tamil superstar Rajnikanth, who is going on a fast on Saturday seeking release of Cauvery water, threw hints on joining politics, saying he will answer his critics in the next elections.
Rajnikant announced on Wednesday that he will fast on October 12, the day on which the Tamil industry is holding a rally at Neyveli urging the Neyveli Lignite Corporation to cut power supply to Karnataka till it releases Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu. Rajnikant, incidentally, has voiced his disapproval of the industry's plan.
The actor said here that there was no use in holding a rally at Neyveli, that too in front of a central government undertaking.
He said those who criticised him had rejected his appeal even without talking to him, and added that he was at Chennai now and was available for talks. "I will reply to the charges made against me during the next elections," he said.
"Why can't they take out a rally at Chennai and present a memorandum to the Tamil Nadu governor," he asked those who criticised his objection to the rally.
"I am first an Indian and only then a Tamilian," he asserted.
"What is going to be achieved by the rally... how are you going to stop power supply to Karnataka," Rajnikant asked, taking a dig at those who had criticised his earlier statement asking the industry to reconsider its decision to hold a rally at Neyveli.
Rajni asked if film personalities would be able to solve a problem, the solution to which had remained elusive despite efforts by Prime Minister Vajpayee, Supreme Court and chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
He said while organising such agitations, care should be taken to protect the lives of the 40 lakh Tamils living in Karnataka.
He thanked those who had understood his statement in the right perspective, particularly DMK leader M Karunanidhi.
"Those who are willing to join me in the fast, which will be either at the South Indian Film Chambers of Commerce building or South Indian Artistes Association complex, can do so", he said.
Rajnikant said SIFAA President Vijaykant, who returned from a visit abroad on Wednesday morning, was talking to all sections of the industry on the issue.
"But I have decided to go on a fast," he said.
Quizzed on his objection to holding a rally at Neyveli, he said it would not solve the sufferings of the Cauvery delta farmers.
Besides, the question of the security of the film stars who were participating in the rally was also involved, he said.

Actor Rajnikanth, who is ploughing a lonely furrow in the Tamil film industry vis-a-vis the collective protest against Karnataka governments refusal to abide by the Supreme Court order, has been granted police permission to sit on a fast in Chennai on Saturday when most of his colleagues will be staging a protest in Neyveli.
The film actors confidante Sathyanarayana today called on the Commissioner of Police at his office and filed applications seeking permission to hold the fast.
Emerging out of the CoPs office, Sathyanarayana told reporters that Rajnikanth will sit on a fast at one of the three venues - Valluvar Kottam, Seerani Arangam and Gandhi Statue - that have been cited in the application.

Some uneducated and politically immatured people want to bring Rajini into politics. Unfortunately, the media brought him into limelight for no reason. He doesn't know the ABCD of politics. He has a mysterious disease, so please leave him alone.
