The selection committee has again overlooked a quality product from South for the Costume drama Devdas. I agree that there were some "moments" in Devdas as well but Kannathil Muthamittaal handled a much more complex subject with rare humane approach. The Film committe decision sucks!!

  To be fair, KM was great in the beginning, but sort of wandered off in the later stages. Why cant we make a good movie, crisp and precise and taut.

  I agree with u 100% as well, devdas is bollywood over rated hype, sharuk cann not act for nuts, Aiswariya the, beauty queen was there though.
  
  as for KM, it was a damn good movie, superb direction, superb acting by Simran, two good songs,Km should be the winner, not fancy dressing films like devdas!

  Why are you guys complaining about KM not going for oscars? we had better movies in tamil like Kaasi and azhagi. There are similiarly so many very good movies made in other languages that are better than devdas and KM. I guess people are considering KM only for the name and clout Mani Ratnam has and not for the quality of the movie. KM was just an above average movie. Nothing great.

  anguish of a writer (serious) over society's "abaththams"
  
  struggle of people over ethnic identity - children carrying AKs - desparate search for peace
  
  ...and many more subtly woven scenes of human emotions & expressions.
  
  Screenplay chosen by Mani & very......very finely scored Backround music by Rahman well deserves a Oscar Nomination

  I am complaining about KM only because it made to the final shortlist of the selection committee. Against films like Devdas and K3G, I thought KM will win hands down and get selected as the Indian film for Oscar but the final choice of sending Devdas astounded me.
  
  About the other films like Azhagi or Kaasi, I have this to say. Even though Azhagi dealt with a different subject, the director went for silly and unrelated Vivek's comedy and Tappaankuthu dance to prop the movie. Against this, Maniratnam was brave enough not to rubbish his movie with such sily jokes or kavarchi dances.
  
  As for Kaasi, though there were some stunning performance, the theme was out and out negative. So again KM differed in this respect. By these measures, I rate KM more than Azhagi or Kaasi.

  both of the movies were realy good.....but i do have to say that i don't agree,do you know how hard it is to recreate the scene in devdas....and shah rukh's acting just rules.......of course kannathil muthamittal had a good story but still i think you should take a good thinking....i think devdas deserves the award...

  There were only 2 Indian films in the top ten list of quality movies reviewed by US weekly Times.Devdas at No 4 and Monsoon Wedding at No5.

  DDEVDAS is a rubbish film.At Cannes a film critic described it as a movie not even fit to lick the boots of lagaan.LAGAAN is well made movie.But in comparison DEVDAS is story which altogether idiotic.KM may not be worldclass.But in today's scenario atleast it could have made into the final five.hmmm DEVDAS will be even in the first round of selection.

  For your information, Devdas has been voted the No.1 International film of the Year in one section of Time Magazine and no 4 in another...Devdas has been greatly appreciated by people of other races here in Singapore too. And no, hardly anyone knows Kannathil...whatever....I think half the battle was lost cause no one could pronounce the name!:)

  For those of you harping Devdas .. Have you heard of film festivals at all ? KM was screened at the Toronto film festival to rave reviews by media critics all over the World . Do check it out before mouthing off about the lack of International recognition.
  
  It is not uncommon for the selection committe to make such dumb selections cause they have always done it in the past. How often have movies of Masters like Adoor Gopalakrishnan , Mani Rathnam , Shahji Kiran, Benegal etc been nominated to the Oscars. Hardly ever.. but If you follow film fesivals and the international cinema you will come across several accolades to movies of these directors.
  
  Remember Oscars are primarily to recognize cinematic excellence in English cinema and the only award other language cinema can compete for is the Best foreign film award..( Life is beautiful is an exception rather than the rule )
  
  Ask yourself : Are the movies of Kurosawa , Fredrico Fellini , Ingmar Bergman , Mohsain Makhmalbaf , Mani Ratnam , Adoor any lesser in quality than the works of Coppola , Spielberg and Scorcese.
  
  If you wish to be a true connoiseur of International Cinema , learn to look beyond the Oscars and follow the trends of World Cinema .

  i liked both the movies km and devdas. they are very good in their own ways. may be the latter was more entertaining. but the facts that its entertaining and that its box office hit even in the west thanks to 'hindi majority' don't make it worth for being selected for oscar from india. probably km is a better choice for oscar. i agree with senthil's message.. also, we have to admit that most of our decent directors specifically mani don't concentrate on single aspect to its depth .. say just adoption or just 'pulam peyardhal'.. making a fruit salad is not what is expected from a good director. even if he starts talking about single issue he goes on compromising for making it a commercial success too or to escape the censor board's scissors, as he had done in his earlier movies. thats the problem, i guess.

  I fully agree with the postings from phantom.The expected thing has happened .Devdas loses Oscar nomination.The film federation now atleast should realise, that multi-crore projects with silly theme and dance tamashas won't make any sense,it is only those masters like Adoor,Buddhadeb or Mani can make india's way to oscars.And this is high time ,mani stops making compromises,just to remain in the commercial domain.

  It is not taste but money and power speaks there (film federation,india).Hereafter good films and Master directors can at best, contend themselves with the critical acclaims they get in various film festivals
