Rajni's Baba gets a postcard boost

PTI [ MONDAY, AUGUST 05, 2002 11:11:56 PM ]

COIMBATORE: Rajnikant, the Tamil superstar, will be back after a gap of three years with his latest, much-hyped `Baba.' No wonder, the Indian Postal Department, also wants to piggyride on the star's popularity as he storms the silver-screen on August 15.

When the Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Pramod Mahajan announced in Parliament in March this year that Indian Postal Department would launch `Meghdoot Card' with the commercial support of Corporate houses, never would he have thought `Baba' would the first customer.

Sources in the postal department say, `Meghdhoot Card' is nothing but the present post card, priced at 50 paise, but with commercial advertisements on the left side of the card's front portion. ``It's the cheapest mode of communication in the country. With just 50 paise your message travels from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. So we thought the department should make some money by selling half of the front portion to prospective advertisers," say officials.

In fact, the postal department incurs an expenditure of Rs 3 towards printing one card. By pricing the card at 50 paise, it incurs a loss of Rs 2.50. ``But we can't discard it as it will amount to neglecting the poor," they point out.

While the officials term the business from `Baba' as `substantial' grapevine has it that the department has sold about one crore cards to Rajni at Rs 1 per card which means a whopping sum of Rs 1 crore!

The first Meghdoot card carrying the advertisement of `Baba' is expected to be launched at Chennai on August 15 to coincide with the film's release.

Though, the idea of getting `Baba' into the card was mooted by the postal department's Tamil Nadu region, it appears, the entire transaction from negotiation to finalisation was done by the Directorate of Postal Department, New Delhi, directly.

If there is any item in India the price of which has not skyrocketed, from time to time, but whose values still remain pristine, it is only the post card.
