Seldom have I looked at a newcomer with so much confidence and said, "My God, now here's a star."
It happened to me when I was watching Kareena Kapoor in Refugee. Even with eyes closed, you needed glares to watch her dazzle and razzle. Now it's Madhavan's turn. I don't care what the bitchy brigade in amchi Mumbai has to say about how South Indian Madhavan looks. The audience loves him. And that's what counts.
Strangely, while some critics in Mumbai have found Madhavan's presence and performance over-the-top, elsewhere he's being hailed as the Next Best Thing. How do we explain this dichotomy except by resorting to a conspiracy theory.
Damn! I hate those. But what to do? All indications are that there's a massive plot to keep Madhavan out of the rat race. Don't ask why or how. Okay go ahead, ask me. I'll tell you.
It's to do with a queer bias in certain sections of the media and industry in Mumbai. Any 'outsider' is seen as a threat. At one time, the Punjabi lobby spearheaded by the Kapoors and the Khannas epitomized that balle-stic stronghold. A man called Amitabh Bachchan broke that mundas' monopoly.
Then came the Khans. Suddenly you had to be either a Khan or a star-son to get a foot into the door to stardom. Until recently, we had the most mediocre species of both genres getting into the portals of success by dint of being at the right place at the right time.
I think Madhavan has the potential to disprove the naysayers who have been telling us for ages that South Indian actors don't stand a chance in hell. For one, he has the right attitude. He doesn't think of himself as God's Chosen One. Nor is his signature tune, "I'm the best, I'm the best." It's "I'm the best... if you say so."
But when you speak to him, you instinctively know he knows he's got it in him, and he's going to make sure everyone around him recognises his potential. There's the nervous energy and oodles of elan. But it's not the oh-I-know-it-all energy and elan of a jaded star who wants to convince he is still the best.
It's a few days after the release of Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein. For some strange reason, Mumbai's biggies are in a jubilant mood. They never wanted Madhavan around. "He's got a paunch and double chin," they would carp unkindly. "Besides if Kamal Haasan couldn't make it in Hindi cinema, how can Madhavan?"
Yeah, how? They can't believe he's in their midst now. They can't believe how hysterical the crowds at Minerva cinema in Mumbai were getting on Sunday evening when suddenly the film did a turn-around. They just can't believe kids up North (including my 9-year old daughter) think he's the Next Best Thing after Hrithik Roshan and that Shah Rukh is kinda... well, gone beyond.
As late as Monday morning I had a star son dismissing Madhavan as a no-no. "He's going to be like Kamal Haasan and Arvind Swamy." Correction, my dear naysayers. Madhavan is going to be like Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh Khan.
He blends the insightful characterisation of the former with the anxious exuberance of the latter. And he's still a fully certifiable trueblue original. That's what makes Madhavan the most memorable mover in maiden-e-jung (aka, the debutant's circle) since... well, since.
As I watched him go through those marvellously adrenalised but superbly controlled motions in RHTDM, I wondered where the astonishing confidence level comes from. "It comes from doing 2000 episodes on television," says Maddy's best friend in Mumbai, television theatre and film actor Anoop Soni.
I think it goes deeper than that. Madhavan proves actors are born, not cultivated. I feel the same way when I watch Hrithik Roshan glide angelically in the Jaisalmer deserts in his father's Coke ad. I felt the same way when I watched Madhavan in the wonderful autorickshaw sequence in Rehna Hai where sweaty with ardour, he nervously asks the auto driver, "Don't you have a.c?"
Like Sridevi, Kareena Kapoor and of course the great Amitabh Bachchan, Madhavan is a born scene-stealer. He chews up every single member of the cast. Well, almost everyone. There's only one sequence where Maddy gets tit for tat. It's the one where at a friend's wedding reception he sidles up the groom to plead for an intro with the lady of his dreams. That unknown actor who plays the groom is also a born scene-stealer.
"Yes, I know," grins Madhavan. "He's my Man Friday Rafiq. Isn't he simply amazing? Would you believe he knew nothing about acting until I coached him how to do that scene. I hope he becomes a major star after this cameo."
Maddy isn't in Mumbai to receive the bitching or the wah-wahs. He's flown back to Chennai to shoot for K Balachander's Tamil film while his wife holds fort in Mumbai checking out the collections and reviews on her star-husband's behalf.
In Chennai, the revered movie moghul K Balachander has triggered off a chain reaction by declaring in an interview that Madhavan is the best actor he has worked with. This, coming from a doyen who discovered groomed and immortalised Kamal Haasan and Rajnikant!
What do I say about Madhavan when I already know he's going to change the way screen heroism is defined. A bit of James Dean, a bit of Rajesh Khanna and lots and lots of Madhavan.
Huzoor, khana tayaar hai? Who's coming for dinner? Shah Rukh Khan?
