Now look here! Mr Holmes has come up with the US domestic B-O chart when the argument itself is that EVEN in Hollywood, the top grossers are NOT the best movies. Okay, if you say, "best movies" is a relative expression, I'll go for "critically acclaimed movies".
And here you are, trying to prove idontknowwhat, with a top 50 list, wherein there is a visible absence of some of the best movies ever made in Hollywood. Notable absentees, in my humble purview: "The Godfather", "Chinatown", "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", "A Clockwork Orange", "Dog Day Afternoon", "Taxi Driver" and many many more, if you please.
My stance(phew!) still stays. How many, of these 50 top box-office draws, are above-the-ordinary movies, in terms of cinematic excellence?!!! And what's that "your Harry Potter" thing? When did I say that it was a great movie? I said it's one of the greatest hits ever and NOT a great movie. And that's exactly the argument about, my friend!

sorry small correction
beautiful mind collected 170 million dollars and it was made for little above 30 million dollars
so it made 6 times the investment. That even block busters like titanic did not do because titanic collected around 650 million dollars but the investment was more than 200 million dollars . so it recovered three times the investiment.
here is the link for beautiful mind which is sitting at 79th place in all time hit lists.

Godfather was a big hit and it collected much more than investment and it did not figure in the list because of the inflation. If you compare the investment which was made for godfather then it was definitely big hit. And this is the same case with the gone with the wind also. If you adjust the inflation then godfather would be definitely in top 100 atleast. I sarcastically said harry potter was great movie. if you don't understand then it is your problem What all I said is great movies are very well received there and that is why hollywood makes so many great movies every year. None of the great movies are flop when compared with investment. That is for sure.

Good posting Tamizharasan. We do not care if dappanguththu movies become hit. But what we expect is even good movies should become hit or atleast it should make little profit so that we can make good movies. I am sure that Godfather was a big hit and it sold lot of dvds when they came up with godfather dvd Set recently. So somebody says beautiful mind is break even what a joke?

Wow Forrest gump collected so much I can't even believe that. I myself do not expect such a class movie can become such a great hit . Vaazhga americargal rasanai. If tamil nadu people taste becomes like that then kamal can make lot of great movies .

Rasigan, it's not your fault that when you don't have anything to say for yourself, you have to back someone who's at least showing some sense in his postings. That's how things work in those silly prep-school fights you know. The meek and the unfancied always love showing off in a crowd, 'coz as an individual he has just bunkum to offer. And I can understand why you mention "somebody"'s statement as a joke in a veiled manner. Coming down to your level and having an argument is practically impossible. So kindly excuse.
Tamizharasan, this by itself has been a major digression from the main topic of the thread. So let me wind up like this. They have good movies. We have good movies. They have not-so-good movies. We have too. What I'm trying to say, is that Box-Office hits aren't NECESSARILY great movies, when you look at it in a worldwide angle. In Hollywood, they are of course coming up with more number of good movies, but most of them have interests other than Box-Office as well.
Studios like Miramax are an example. They invest in low-profile indie movies not for returns at the Box-Office alone. They get good exposure at festivals internationally. But here, the sole go is Box-Office. In such an industry, what's the point in sulking over good movies flopping at the B-O? Watch the movie, take it or leave it. We've been carping a lot for decades about the death of good cinema. There was a trend of porn movies. Silly comedies ruled the roost for a while. Loud actioners too. But, amidst all these, we still get to discuss an "Azhagi" and "Bharati". However less in numbers, we are still getting them. And WILL keep getting them. Be happy about that and don't sulk on whether they run for jubilees or are out of the theatres in a week. Cheers.

ungalukku en poththukkuttu varuthu naan innoruththurai support panna. What a loser you are you do not accept the fact that tamil cine fans have very bad taste when compared with hollywood people. The statistics proved those beyond the doubt you yourself says forrest gump is slight bigger hit and not like harry potter and list proved it is bigger hit than harry potter. you are saying beautiful mind is break even and list proved that it collected much much more than investment. I supported tamizharasan postings because he made sense like american fans and you do not make sense like tamil cine fans. So you are not able support argument of yours because tamizharasan comes with counter attack each and every time. and you are showing your anger towards me. eppadiyo puzhaichchi ponga
Anyway thanks tamizharasan for giving all these data.

Tamizharasan & Rasigan,
It is a ggod link, Box office contains DVD collection also ? Isn't it ?
forrest Gump is not only deciding the tatste. C Oecean eleven, Die another day in the list. But so many good movies missing. examples Good will hunting, Finding Forrester , Rookie .
These movies r not flop obvious reason is wide range of market unlike ours.
back to topic,
How can ppl decide a movie flop while it sstill running at theatres ? I think Anbe Sivam will earn little profit like Kannathil muttamittal.
And what is the point of author of this thread.

let me tell you one thing I am ardent fan of rajini kant and I like entertainers like every one else. But what all I tried to say here is american people appreciate good movies better than our tamil fans and i do not have even slightest doubt about that. But if anbe sivam becomes hit it is good for tamil cinema and that is what all I tried to prove. But see all great movies in hollywood recovered atleast twice the cost invested. they may not feature in this list because of the inflation. Inflation tend to list only recent movies. But take the example of gone with the wind as i mentioned before it is really a cinematic excellence and if you see the inflation adjustment then definitely it is the biggest hit of all time and critically it got 10 oscars and not only that it is considered to be one of three all time great movies. in my opinion if the tamil cine fans appreciate anbe sivam the same way it should collect atleast twice its investment. But you know what happened it is struggling to recover its cost. So it is all about fans not only quality which makes good movies hit.

Boxoffice collection does not include dvd sales. DVD sales is different thing.

appreciate ? I don't know stats but market for hollywood is wide range.
ecconmy, DVD release r other main reason for flop of good movies.
I like to inderline onething, lot of ppl welcome ANBESIVAM , but watched them not in theatres but DVD, VCD and AHS.
Don't asl me source, they have world wide business int this ( Rental and sales of DVD etc.

Kajan has highligted one of the major problems in the tamil film industry- VCDs, videos and DVDs. And all these are churned out (most of the time illegally) while the movie is still showing in theatres. I saw an interview of Kamal once on SUN TV and he mentioned how VCDs and the like are undercutting the business of film.
That's why as much as possible, I would like to watch new Tamil movies at the cinema. Unfortunately, here in Brisbane, there are no cinemas for Indian movies. I have to wait months later and then get a relative to send me the DVD from overseas.
