Does Manirathnam deserve to be called a good director

Manirathnam had a good story to tell in Mouna Raagam...but after that did he really produce good movies??
All his movies since then have been hyped with raja, ARR's music or P.C sriram's camera and Thotadharani's sets. The movies he has taken lack originality or a strong theme and he now with his movie Uyire has taken the tamil people for a ride.
He is a megalomaniac who tries to impress people with his so called controversial themes for which he lacks maturity to handle.

Hi manirathnam,
I have a script with me.I have not copied like u.I saw amost of ur aspirants was talking about Nayagan.Nayagan was copied from "God Father".Do u have the guts to accept this.
But I think u can do good movies. And Kannathil muthammital is the first step.Keep it up.
bregards,
indu

hi men ,see who is called a good dierector.
man who can get him to past & future in imagination and very much syncronised with present and contributing to society wellfare.
this way g.m never falls below the grammar.
we could'nt blame only him for not giving flims upto that(mouna ragam)standards.
society must felt guilty for its bad taste,culture..
see we have a great example "HEY RAM"
but even g.m took risk in films like iruvar, dilse.
g.m never compromise him in his story line for any men.(even for bomb blasts)
see we couldnot just reason raja or ar for g.m's success, since they did'nt work only for g.m
raja ar did many films, but still g.m's films are outstanding
raja could'nt get one more nayagan & not onemore kannathil muthamittal for a.r
there the man MANIRATHNAM is
im saying this here, since just i know well how tough it is to get a good story out from our mind

Hi Guys,
Has anyone read GODFATHER or seen the movie. Well Mani is much better than those guys. Maybe the concept of a don as the hero is new but not the whole story. Even Thalapathi is the mordern form of Karna & Duruyoythana(with the generous surya whose mother abandons him and her second son arjun, even the names suggest this) .
But the treatment is so contemprory and nice.
Read Godfather(author Mario Puso) before u compare.

HI Sabeshan here from New Zealand... OH MY GOD who ever says maniratnam is a bad directore is seriously messed up in the head.... his movies are by far the best movies ever made... some ppl just see them as movies but when you look deep into the movie its a movie with symbolism, contrast, portrayals and depictions of everyday life matters.... i dont see where you guys get this idea of mani ratnam being a crap director.. did you not see alaipayuthey? or kannathil mutthamittal? or uire? bombay? iruvar?...honestly guys wake up... smell the real world.... if it werent for directors like him , kathir, shankar tamil cinema wouldnt even have a name.. tamil cinema just keeps getting worse year by year.... its very sad really.
anyoen one wana argue bout htis.. simply email me.

hey, please do not under estimate this director. Do not forget his work in Nayakan, mouna ragam... need not list down his films. It is not necessary that all the movies has to be good for being a good director. Good director is the one who blends all the elements in a movie viz acting, script, screen play, camera, music, editing etc etc. He does that in the right propotion. And lots of director of today admit that they have learnt lot from maniratnam. Of course to appreciate his movies you should have particular taste. I feel 80% of people like his way of narrating stories. I am sorry to say that u fall under that 20%. Of course i agree dilse is a piece of scrap. But does not mean that he is doomed. After that he took quickies like alay payuthe and kannathil muthamittal. Any answers for those cookies???

I have only seen his films from Dalapati onwards, but Kannathil Muthamittal is the first of his films that I haven't had any major complaint about.
Last weekend I watched Dil Se for the first time. That makes at least 3 films in which Ratnam has used the hero who sees a girl once and immediately falls in love with her and keeps pursuing her until she reciprocates. I felt the love story was not developed enough. He used the same obsessive hero type thing in Alai Payuthey and Bombay. The scene in Bombay where Arvind Swamy cuts his and Manisha's arms and puts the wounds together was just stupid.
I think Ratnam is a better director than many, but his films are often frustrating to me. Bombay would have been an okay film if not for most of the songs. Same with Roja, even though it was the film that introduced A.R. Rahman to us.

mani rathnam is a good director. but definitely not the best in south.
ram gopal verma is the best in south. he is one versatile director. mani gives only serious movies. there is hardly any difference in his movies. all have violence and action.
but verma gives different movies like bhoot, satya, road, mast , daud etc...
mani needs to improve. he's following rajini'oath of giving hits. he'll soon run out of options. he shud better change before it is too late.

RGV's films usually feature violence too, like the ones you listed. Rangeela was probably the exception.
