Generalization towards the medical fraternity aside, Vasool Raja has spontaneous humor, touching sensitivity and understated old school sentimentality.
A kind hearted and good conscience Rajaram aks Vasool Raja (Kamalhassan), a small time don, does 'vasool business' with his right hand Vaddi (Prabhu). They are very happy in the by anes of Chennai, though his only problem is the annual visit of his parents from the village. His parents (Nagesh and Rohini Hattangadi) think Raja is a Doctor who runs his own hospital. So on their arrival Raja's house is converted into a makeshift hospital. During a trip, Nagesh meets his doctor friend Vishwanathan (Prakash Raj) and is keen to get his son married to his daughter Paapu (Sneha). Dr.Vishwanathan breaks off the engagement and humiliates Nagesh once Rajaram's true colors are revealed. This incident changes Vasool Raja. Nagesh is totally heartbroken, which prompts Raja to change his ways for the better. He decides to become a doctor and enrolls in Dr.Vishwanathan's medical college. Now the story of Vasool Raja turning into an MBBS kick starts. What follows makes the viewers holding their stomach in laughter and fighting back tears, a mixture of comedy and emotion.
Kamal's flair for comedy has made him come out in flying colors. He is brilliant and natural. Prabhu as Vaddi and a sidekick of Kamal is not being used properly but he is neat even in the given small role. Sneha as Paapu alias Janaki plays her part sincerely. The simple look on her face matches her character well. Prakash Raj too, is hilarious as the aggravated man who laughs exaggeratedly just to ease his own boiling tension inside.
Other characters in this film include Zaheer (Jaya Surya) who suffers from cancer but only wants the tender care of Vasool Raja, Nagesh, Rohini Hattangadi, Crazy Mohan etc. Although the film moves in a brisk manner, it tends to get dragged in the second half. Director Saran has extracted excellent performances from his cast. He could have paid more attention on the length and the pace of the film. Dialogues by Crazy Mohan is praiseworthy, especially the ones delivered by Kamal and Vaddi. The witty one-liners will attract the masses. The music is nice and the songs are pleasant.
