thanx krish. hello trueman. i used to see films only in bits and pieces. the moment i saw french kiss i convinced myself that it is a bit fit for our indian audiences. within a month a hindi film, starring ajay and kajol was on the theatres and it went on to become a bit hit all over india and overseas. besides trueman all big hollywood production companies have their distribution network and offices in india and they know about the developments here.my comparison of thevar mahan is on the godfather book not with the film

Pandiana Kokka!!??!!You are the coolest man!
Just a little comment about Pothigai's remarks: "my comparison of thevar mahan is on the godfather book not with the film". Well, either way, the people in Hollywood who saw Thevar Mahan to decide whher it should be nominated or not obviously didn't see any similarities with Mario Puzo's novel and the film. Or by now, they would have contacted him or Francis Ford Coppola to discuss possible legal actions.

You are right Kumar. My point is that Nayagan and Thevar Magan were not based on God Father. Because there are a lot of similar charcters living in India (example, Varda in Bombay). Well, I am going to India and will join you guys once I come back

hi kumar thanx for your concern. actually i do not have anything against these usual copycats since they don't have any pretensions. see if deva copied a tune it is not a news. but if it is done by rahman, i will not definitely like it, since he being hailed by the media as a genius. i reiterate, the first quality of a genius is originality and creativity. suppose if he is truly inspired by another work and to bring it to the benefit of his own people he must have the courage to accept it. he will be known by his other works. even a money-hungry lawyer will not advice his client to file a suit against the producers of thevar mahan, since i have said already that its story is beautifully woven around the core of godfather. it is not copied, where one can allege his copy rights been violated but i still feel strongly that, whoever conceived the story must have written it after reading the mario puzo's classic. well about kamal, who is being hailed as a genius, is bringing out film after film different roles but why he has to pick them up from foreign films. i want to remind you both story. once upon a time, a person boasted about his intelligence too much. a small boy drew a line on the board and asked him to make it small without touching it. our intelligent man could not do it. that boy simply drew another big line near it and presto our intelligent protested it was so easy, which anybody could do. that boy replied yes it is so easy but only after i showed how to do it. now tell me………in the 100 years of film history who conceived a wonderful and highly marketable idea that a thrown out husband could re-enter the house as a maid servant. my dear friends it is the conception that is hard……the rest is easy if your are prepared to spend money and work hard. another example…..we can't count with our fingers the number of films released on the concept of shark attacks. so, any director of worth his salt can make it. but who thought he could make a successful film out of the novel jaws is hailed as a genius. my only concern is there are only three people whom, whom the media hammers into our head as genius in the tamil film world. i would say it is bharathi rajja who came with an original idea and turned the tamil film world upside down is the genius. well, about kamal i liked hey ram so much since it is an original work.

Sri "Cool" Pandian Thunai.
Hi Pothigai. I suppose our respective definitions of genius may be different, hence our acceptence of certain people in the Tamil movie industry as geniuses. You said that "i reiterate, the first quality of a genius is originality and creativity." That's a pretty tough criteria! Maybe I'm a little less harsh when I brand someone a genius. Well, if originality is genius, then no filmaker is a genius, except the Lumiere brothers who invented the moving pictures in the late 19th century! Why? Because they invented the medium of film. They were the original ones who made moving pictures and screened them to audiences. Yes, originality is ONE of the criteria for genius, but it's NOT the only one, and not necessarily the first one either! To me, genius can also mean using existing tools, mediums, etc, and making it better, re-defining it, improving it, re-inventing it. Computers and Information Technology were largely the invention of the west. But today, some of the world's foremost IT experts, and even GENIUSES, are Indians! Yet they didn't invent computers.
On the note of Indian films; India has over the past century used film in a very unique way; while other countries have taken their cue from western narratives, Indians made movies with themes and storylines which are very unique to their culture. Aspects such as music, songs, melodrama and even fight scenes have remained in Indian films for years; yet the Indian film industry has managed to move on with the times, albeit slowly. There is almost a cult following of Indian films in some western countries because of its unique blend of music and melodrama.
Pothigai, you also said "....so, any director of worth his salt can make it. but who thought he could make a successful film out of the novel jaws is hailed as a genius." I have to disagree, because isn't this what it's all about- the lack of originality. By your definition of genius, Speilberg cannot be defined as one since he did not conceive the story of a shark; he too has taken the story from one medium and translated it to another. If he had written the novel Jaws, then it would be another matter. It's a very circular argument isn't it? As for Kamal being a genius- let's first define what kind of a genius he is. Thus far he has driected only 2 films. So as a filmaker/director, he has yet to prove his full potential (although I feel that his Hey Ram was one of the best movies I have ever seen, Indian or otherwise.)He is first and foremost an actor. He has proven himself to be versatile and has taken many of his roles to the extreme, something which only a few actors are willing to do. In my opinion, he is an acting genius in his own right, just as Barathi Raja is a directing genius an Ilayaraja is a music genius. They didn't invent acting, or the art of film direction or music; but they all used these mediums in a unique way, refining it, re-inventing it and taking it to another level, setting higher standards as they go.
