On that account Guna was a class act.No life altering lessons. Perhaps because it was not writen by Kamal , but by Saab John (? who is this.? His name appears in the acting credits of Kurudhi Punal too.I guess he is the guy who plays Narasimham.Shall be glad to receive details from any of you guys who know bout him).
For all 'explanations','footnotes' for the movie watch the famous sodium pentathol scene with Girish Karnad. The Abhiramian obesession is shown to be built by an inmate cameoed by the late Ananthu (to whom Hey Ram is dedicated) and grows on Guna.
Then there is the slow development of the Stockholm syndrome with the girl ( perhaps the only sore point in the movie, the role just needed someone gorgeous and divine and an okay actress; guess Kamal took a day off on the screen test!).

To be kind to Bala let me not compare the movies but stick comparing the lead players. Let me also keep Vikram's characterization questions (as rightly raised by Raghav) out of the purview. It was doubtlessly a great perfomance. The guy was marvellous. Now having said that how does he compare with Kamal in Guna. Kamal gets the lead for sheer range of emoting in Guna. He displays obsession throughout, inanity ('Sirippu Varudhey !' with his old mom after the document signing flops), reckless love when getting the doctor, anger to vulnerability in a second (immediately after the Sirippu varudhey scene) with his mother. A child like surrender to Rosy and Girish Karnad....My list is endless.
I have always maintained Kamal is a better scriptwriter than an actor and he does have some 'Vietnam Veedus' of his own to his credit (debit?) but Guna was a class act.Vikram did earn his national award , no doubt about that.

Moreover trying to make an intertemporal comparison is not a smart thing. Because then we end up with qns like Guna v Krishnaswamy (Mahandhi) and Mahanadhi v Andha Naal. These qns are no good except for ppl like whiling away saturday afternoons in front of the PCs. But then what is Saturday good for.
As SEan Penn said in his Oscar acceptance speech : There is no such thing as Best in Acting.
PS: Guys am trying to revive this gone case thread here.

Read your posting with great interest. I agree with you on matters pertaining to character comparisons. I suppose this stems from the comparison of actors (pitting one’s favourite actor against another). Unfortunately, many Tamil cine fans have this ‘rivalry’ mentality; i.e., if you like one actor very much, you must hate his contemporary/colleague. This comparison then extends to the characters these ‘rival’ actors play.
Yes, there’s absolutely no logic in comparing characters to identify a ‘better’ actor (because some actors actually shine in some roles and not in others). Unless, of course, both actors play the same character.
