  Tamil superstars have refused to take a pay cut, and
  blame the unprofessional producers, directors with
  lack of ideas and video piracy for the present plight
  of Tamil film industry.
  
  Top hero Kamalhassan has said at a press conference
  that stars will not reduce their salaries. According
  to him the demand by the producers is as old as the
  hills and stars can make money only when their luck
  holds at the box-office.
  
  But Sify.com understands that these superstars are
  only putting a brave front; most of them are in deep
  trouble.
  
  
  We take a look at the star status, salaries and films
  under production.
  
  Rajnikanth - The megastar is least bothered as he is
  the only star, whom the exhibitor and distributor are
  willing to fund without batting an eyelid.
  
  Kamalhassan - Salary - Rs 5 crore. No producer or
  distributor is willing to touch him. His film under
  production is Sandiyar and since there are no
  producers to back him, the star himself is producing
  it.
  
  Vijaykanth - Salary - Rs 3.25 crore. Producers are
  there if he slashes his rate by 50 percent. He has no
  films under production.
  
  Vijay - Salary - Rs 3 crore + Chennai city
  distribution rights. After a string of flops he is a
  worried man. He has already given up the city rights.
  Films due are Geethai on April 14 with most areas
  unsold. However Kavitaalaya has announced a film with
  him.
  
  Ajit - Salary - Rs 3 crore. Due to his astronomical
  salary his films do not break even. If he slashes his
  rates he becomes viable. Films under production are
  Jana which is now stuck as producer Kaaja Moideen
  wants the star to reduce his price. So Ajit has asked
  his friend and loyal producer Nic Arts Chakravarthy to
  start work on Mahaa. Nobody knows the deal between
  them!
  
  Vikram - Salary - Rs 2 crore. He is the most-wanted in
  the trade after Dhool. And his old film Kathal
  Sadugudu has at last found buyers. His May 1 release
  Saami is red hot among the distributors.

  Vijayakanth should retire ASAP. As a spectator, I find it awful (or kind of a satire) to see him as a hero. Especially, when he was paired up with the likes of Kiran et al (Eg: Thennavan. Oh my gosh! the movie was a unintended comedy!)
  
  Vijayakanth and Kiran singing duet together was the height of comedy and looked like sorta a spoofy movie.

  If Vijayakanth is a truly diginified person he should conider either one of the 2 options:
  
  1. Retire from cinema from cinema for good (which is a welcome decision :-)
  
  2. Take up the character roles like roles of Manivannan, Vinu chakravarthy etc. Vijayakanth can even try his luck with comedy tracks too like Karunaas, Dhamu or Vadivelu. Who knows he might give them a run for their money!

  U say dignified persons should either retire from films or take up character roles. Fine. Then why does simbu act as hero? Is he not dignified?
  I think, being his fan (God!), U should answer.
  
  If an upstart like Simbu can act as hero, then it shows the level to which tamil cinema has descended.
