INTRO
Maangalyam explores the lives of three couples. All connected in some way as you will see as the story unfolds. It is a story that reminds us of how important love is in marriage and the culture we live in.
THE FIRST SCENE
Nesan sat on the bed, thinking deeply. His heart, beating wildly. Only 8 hours ago had he tied the thaali round Lakshmi's neck. Now it was their first night.
He pitied her.
A young girl hardly 20, torn out of her country to marry a stranger she hardly knew, to live in a strange land, an alien culture.
They'd hardly met. One moment dowry was discussed, then engagement, marriage and now this. Two strangers who were to spend the rest of their lives together. Love, after all in marriages arranged by parents is never a topic of issue.
Nesan smiled wryly at this thought. It was this stubborness on parents' behalf that had torn Sita from him. They'd been in love for over five years. Her parents, on finding out, had stauchly opposed it and had married her off, against her will to someone else. Heartbroken, he too, had now after much pain, married.
He sat, thinking all this when Lakshmi entered the room. She smiled at him,
"Maami told me to give you this."
She held out a tumbler of hot milk.
"No thank you, I'm not thirsty."
"Are you ill?"
"No, just tired," he lay down on the bed, "If you don't mind, it's been a long day."
He lay there. Pretending to sleep. He couldn't. Not tonight. Sita was still in his mind and Heart.
Lakshmi watched her husband. Hurt. What had she done wrong? She looked into the tumbler of milk, her hands, shaking.
