"Anitha!"
It was over. Over. Over.
Vijay sat up. It'd been a nightmare. The nightmare that wouldn't let go of him for the last two years. A girl. Destroyed before his very eyes, the sight that haunted him still. He couldn't go back to sleep. The clock struck two. For Anjali, he'd do it.
..................................................
The week passed. Anjali woke up one morning.
Saturday, she thought happily, better phone Vijay and see if we can go to the beach as we planned today.
After the incident on the bus she hadn't seen him but she was sure she'd see him today.
"Anji," her mother called.
"Yenna amma?"
"There's something I have to tell you."
Anjali slowly came down to where her mother was, at the foot of the stairs.
"What is it amma?"
"Naan solluraen." Anjali turned around to where her father stood,at the top of the stairs.
A thought slowly dawned in her. With a shaking voice she again asked the fatal question,
"Yenna appa?"
"You can't go to the beach today with Vijay."
"Why?"
" Because he left this town a week ago.He won't
ever come back. He's left this place with his family. In a week's time he'll be married to a girl called Jennifer and settle there."
Her father's words registered on her numb brain,
"No! You're lying! He'd never have left without telling me! I'm his best friend!," she was hysterical now,"I'm his best friend! He didn't even tell me he was engaged! Why did he leave me?"
her tone was growing more and more hysterical by the minute.
SLAP.
Anjali stared, in shock at her mother.
"Vaaya pothadi."
Even her father looked surprised at his usual gentle wife.
"Itho paar."
She looked at her mother's hand. An envolope. A name. Her name. In Vijay's writing.
She grabbed it and ran. Out of the house. She wanted to be alone. With the letter.
