A TANJORE CURRY I REMEMBER FROM MY CHILDHOOD: IT CONTAINS COCONUT MILK, TAMARIND, VENDAKKAI AND MUTTON. DOES ANY BODY HAVE A RECIPE? IT CAN ALSO BE MADE WITH DRUMSTICKS OR KATHRIKAI.

Just made a Drumstick Mutton Curry today, and happened to see your message. The recipe is as follows:
Clean, wash and cut 500 gms mutton. Wash 4 drumsticks, and cut into 3" pieces. Grate 1/2 cocnut and make it into a fine paste along with 2 tsp poppy seeds (khus khus).
Heat 2 tbsp oil & 1 tbsp ghee. Season with 1 heaped tsp vadagam, else 3 cloves, 2 (1") pieces cinnamon & 2 cardomom.
Add 2 medium onions, chopped. Fry till brown. Add 2 chopped tomatoes, fry till blended well. Add 1/2 tsp haldi pwdr, 3 heaped tsp dhania powder, 2 heaped tsp chilli powder, 2 heaped tsp ginger garlic paste and 2 tbsp water, so that all the ingredients are well blended. Stir fry.

Add mutton and fry till oil rises to the top. Add 2 cups of water, salt, 2250 gms potatoes (with skin) and pressure cook for 15 mins.
When the cooker cools down, add the coconut-poppy paste, 2 cups of water, drumsticks, adjust seasoning and boil till drumsticks are cooked.
Add 2 tsp thick tamarind puld. Simmer for 5 mins and serve hot with steamed rice/rotis/puris.
Yummmmmy!!
I made this for the first time today, and my hubby says that it should go on the list for guests. Follow up with a rasam course, and u're all set for a lazy Sunday afternoon!

U're v. welcome! One thing, that should be 250 gms potatoes, and not 2250 gms potatoes [though I suppose u must've guessed that:)]. And u can also adjust the qty of veggies according to ur requirements. I finally added just 2 drumsticks and about 3 smallish potatoes, and that seemed fine...

In Your recipie you mentioned season with vadagam. I live in chicago I don't think we get it in stores here is there a method you can suggest to make it at home.

Don't know how to make vadagam at home & from what I know of the process, it is quite time consuming. The alternative to vadagam is given above. But I'll repeat here for quick reference -
Season with 1 heaped tsp vadagam. If vadagam not available, use 3 cloves, 2 (1") pieces cinnamon & 2 cardomom.
This works well as a substitute...
