Fresh coconuts...

Does anyone know how to choose a fresh coconut? We are finding that only about one out of three or four coconuts at the store are actually fresh. Some just smell like alcohol, some have black marks on the inside, and some are extremely rank.
We have been trying to filter out fairly light coconuts, coconuts that don't have any or much water, any visible mold, or coconuts with very many visible cracks.
Are we doing the wrong thing? Is there a better way to choose a fresh coconut? This is making fresh coconuts cost as much as $7 (cost of 4-5 coconuts =)!
Thanks,
Bryan and Soosi

Hello Bryan and Soosi,
Take a look at the tail of the coconut and look at the portion of Three eyes.Smell that portion also.If the tail beginning is black, the coconut inside is full of fungus. The eyes are not supposed to be black .Try pinching or scraping a black eye.If a portion comes off and is soft, the coconut is bad.
The outer shell of coconut must be uniformly brow.It should not have black patches.Further more, the coconut should be shaken to confirm if you hear sound of water. You must be able to hear or feel it.Try hitting one coconut lightly with another. The resultant sound must be high pitched treble type and not bass type.
Hope this helps.

I asked the guy stationed in the produce isle at Walmart what they would be willing to do to help me be better satisfied with my purchase since I was having trouble with finding good ones as well. He told me to bring the little sticker that is on the coconut along with the register tape and I would be given another one. You might be able to work out something like that where you shop.

For Londoners, in one shop in East Ham they opened the coconut for me to chek that i got a good one. So maybe u can ask if they have some method of checking at smaller grocery shops. But in the superstores u would hv to inform the bomb squad before attempting something like that !!
