Sundal
Ingredients
Channa 1 cup
Green Chillies 2 or 3
Red Chilly 1
Ginger 1 cm
Lime 1/2
Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
Urad dhal 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Salt 3/4 tsp
Grated Coconut 2 tbsp
Raw mango 1/4 cup (cut into small pieces)
Asafoteda
Curry leaves a little
Oil
Method
Soak channa overnight in plenty of water. Next day wash well, add one cup of water & pressure cook for 8 minutes. After removing from the cooker, drain off excess water.
Chop green chillies & ginger finely.
Heat oil in a thick pan. Add mustard seeds and when it starts spluttering, add urad dhal, red chilly, asofoteda & curry leaves.
Fry a bit. Add the cooked channa, salt, turmeric & mango pieces.
Fry well till the mixture is dry. Add grated coconut & lime juice.
Toss abit & reomove from fire.
Garnish with coriander leaves.
Serve hot or cold as evening snack.

masala sundal
Soak any one of the following in water for at least 8 hours.
Channa dal, white peas, black eyed beans, red kidney beans
Add salt and cook fully in a pressure cooker so that the lentils become soft. Boil 1 medium tomato and mash. In a vessel, add 1/2 cup water, mashed tomato,a little bit of tamarind juice, and heat. Fry 1 tsp cumin seeds in oil and add it to the mix. Add the boiled dal and stir for about 1 min.Add 1/2 tsp of garam masala powder. Add fresh coriander leaves.

Ingredients:
1 cup chickpeas brown soaked overnight
4-5 green chillies sliced fine
1/2 cup fresh coconut scraped
1/4 tsp. mustard seeds
1/2 tsp. cumin seeds
1 stalk curry leaves
1 tsp. coriander leaves finely chopped
2 tsp. lemon juice
2-3 pinches asafoetida
salt to taste
1 tbsp. oil
Method:
Pressurecook peas till tender (5-6 whistles).
Drain and keep aside.
Heat oil, add seeds allow to splutter.
Add chillies, curry leaves and stir.
Add peas, coconut and other ingredients, except coriander.
Stir cook till the water is evaporated.
Serve hot or cold.
Making time: 15 minutes (excluding soaking and steaming time)
Makes: 4 servings

Why not just use the canned garbanzo beans from the supermarket? Much easier also tastes the same to me.

yes. Canned Garbanzo beans is a good idea. You can use it directly with out even soaking it. But remember to rinse it well to remove the smell of the preservatives.

Here is a couple more "suttukittu vantha" recipes. :-))
SUNDAL
Soak 4 cups whlte peas overnight and then boil it in a pressure cooker.Drain the water and keep
aside. Heat 2 tsp of oil and add mustard seeds.To this add 1 cup grated cocomut, 1 cup grated
sour mangoes 3 tsp grated hot green chillies and cook lightly. To this add the boiled peas and
mix well.
COCONUT SUNDAL
Soak any one of the following in water for at least 8 hours.
Channa dal, white peas, black eyed beans, red kidney beans
Add salt and cook fully in a pressure cooker so that the lentils become soft. In little oil, add
mustard seeds. When it pops, add chopped green chillies and grated coconut and roast lightly for
1 min. Add this to the cooked dal.
