Take equal quantities of rice flour and jaggery (powdered) and mix them. Sprinkle some cocnut water on it to give it the desired consistency. If coconut water is not available, then add plain water.

Hi Rema,
Is there any special pooja or for any particular God, this kind of vilakku should be done? Is it good for home (shubam) to do everyday, like we light ordinary lamp in front of God daily?
Some years back, our neighbours used to give us some prasadam (some of the flour from the vilakku) and say it is a special praying. I have always wanted to know the correct process and traditional method of doing this puja; Can you please explain how it is to be done ?
Hope it is not a trouble,
Kamakshi.

Hi Kamakshi,
Generally doing this pooja depends on once family tradition. It is followed in Aadi month for Goddess Devi any Fridays except the first and the last, also some do it on Puratassi masa for Lord Venkatesha.

The mix as stated by Aruna is shaped into a lamp and ghee is used instead of oil. Also, a kalasam is kept in front of Goddess with water and a coconut(smeared with turmeric all over and a kumkum kept on it as a face) on top and with mango leaves (thoranam as it is called)tied to the Sombu(its a vessel) and a red colour cloth is wrapped around the sombu (as is called in Tamil). This wud look like a Goddess dressed in Red dress. And then the normal Lalitha Sahasranamam is chanted and usual pooja is done and the lamp is lit as an offering to the Goddess Devi. Also, hibiscus flowers(preferably any red flowers) are used for this pooja. And the mavu is offered as prasadam.
There are differnt means of doing this, but this is how I have seen it done.
This again depends on the family or ancestor tradition. Elders say that this is good for the family.
