Hi ! Mr Venkatesh,
for plain basmati rice the usual measure is 1/2 cup rice per person. (I mean a normal size tea cup & not the gawah cup used by the arabs ).
Here's how i do it...
(1) wash the rice well 4-5 times.
(2)Soak in 1 cup warm water for 1/2hr. (usually 1 hr for larger quantities of rice)
(2) Transfer to coking vessel & cook on slow fire in the same water . Add about 1/2tsp salt.
(3)Cover vessel & let it cook till all water dries up.

hi Venkatesh,
try this . It goes very well with papadam & raita.
basmati rice ======> 1 cup
carrot 1
beans a handful
capsicum 1
green peas a handful
maggie chicken cube 1 cube
green cardamom (elaichi) 2
clove (lavang) 2
cinnamon 1"
bay leaf 1
fried nuts & raisins (optional) 1 tbsp
medium size onion 1 finley
sliced.
Ghee 3 tbsp
water 2 cups
Method :
(1) Wash the rice well
(2) Soak in water for about 1 hr.& drain.
(3) Heat 2 cups water in small vessel & drop in maggie cube & bring to boil. Put off the fire & let it cool down. This is called chcken stock.
(4)Meanwhile, wash & cut all yr vegetables into thin slices .
(4)Heat ghee in vessel ( non stick preferably) on slow fire & put in the spices -cardamon, cinnamon, cloves & bay leaf & fry till the flavour of the spices is given (apprx 1 minute).
(5)Add the sliced onions & fry till soft or slightly brown.- Now increase the flame to medium
(6)Add the sliced vegetables & fry - 3-4 min.
(7)Add drained rice & fry for about 3 min.
(8)Add nuts & raisin.
(9)Add maggie stock & mix once . Close the vessel & let it cook on slow fire till all the water dries up apprx 15-20 min or max 1/2 hr.
Note - U can use 1/2 cup frozen mixed vegetable instead of fresh veg but the fresh ones taste better & I beleive more healthy.
This receipe come is handy for me when I have unexpected guest or when I'm tooooo tired for elaborate cooking.

Hi Venkatesh
If u buy a Electric rice cooker,it will be easy for u.In electric rice cooker, they will provide a cup.In that u can put one cup for u.For 1 cup of rice(whatever size may be the cup) add two cups of water.(wash the rice 2 to 3 times)
If it is normal cooker, then also the proportion is same, but u have to keep for 2 to 3 whistles. If u want rice to be sticky u can keep it for 3 whistles.
When doing in bowl, just add two and half cups of water and bring it to boil and after that put washed rice and again bring it boil.when it starts boiling ,simmer the stove and close the bowl with plate for 15 minutes. Then it will be ready.
But getting a electric rice cooker is best.
Good luck
Anu.

hi Anu
regardng your recommendation of electric rice cooker, doesn't the rice stick to the bottom of the pan? Mine always does. I wonder if I'm going wrong somewhere. Beisdes, it has to be basmati rice. Anyother type does not cook within promised time.
what do u say??

Hi Jenin,
Yeah..I agree with u..I was also suffering a lot with rice sticking at the bottom of the cooker. But when u add drops of lemon juice ..the rice wont stick together and when u apply oil to the base of the cooker b4 putting rice it wont stick.
If u r lazy to do all these things, what u can do is when the rice is boiling(when the water is spilling out)..u open the cooker and just mix the rice with spatula or spoon(karandi) and close it again. When the rice is done(when it goes to warm stage)immediately plug it off and toss the rice with spoon.
Hope this should work.I am using Raw rice only...it works fine for me...for 1 cup of rice add two cups of water.
Basmati rice u can very well keep it in pressure cooker..but add little more water than 2 cups may be 2 1/4 cups of water for basmati rice and keep it for 3 whistles.
All the Best

Hi, try using the brand Ravi sona masuri rice, results like basamti BUT without the aroma. Basmati rice does not go well with all curries/sambar especially south indian, it is excellent for non-veg. 1:3 or 31/2 ratio.(1 cup rice 3 cups H20) Next time buy non-stick electric cooker, i got mine in the chinese store but lately it is available almost all stores in the bay area.It is worth it, easy clean up/no prob. of sticking at the bottom.

Oh BTW if using the stove pot to cook Ravi sona masuri rice the H20 measurement is the same. Wash rice and add the H20 and let it boil once, simmer/reduce heat, and after awhile when only little H20 is left cover lid SO u'll not have any spill over.( many atimes i forget to cover the lid had no prob. with this brand of rice, it cooks well)

Here is a tried and true method of cooking perfect rice in the rice cooker. 1:2 or 1:3 rice water ratio whould work depending upon the new rice/old rice. After you switch on the cooker and put the lid on, cover the lid with a large clean kitchen towel. Try it and no mess and no sticking at the bottom problem.

Hi,
Rice sticking to the bottom?
As Pavithra mentioned, when the rice cooker comes to Keep Warm position, turn it off.
Then remove the bowl from cooker. The rice sticks to the bottom if the cooker stays in Keep Warm for a long time.
Rice taking longer time to cook?
First put the water in the bowl in rice cooker. After the water gets hot or starts boiling, add the rice. The rice will cook faster this way.

Hi,
for 1 cup rice u can add 2 cups of water. If u put the rice in a bowl and going to keep in the pressure cooker then it will take only 15 mins to cook. after putting the weight.

Hi,
yes, after hearing the 1st whistle reduce the

add extra water and keep for 5 or 10 mins more.
Have a good day.

Hi,
Rice cooked in microwave.
I use Sona Masoori Rice. For 1 cup of rice add 2 1\2 cups of water in a microwave bowl. After adding these two, the bowl should be half full so that it can hold the cooked rice.
Set the time for 20 minutes.
Thats it.

I would like to know what to add to Basmati Rice? I've eaten in Indian restaurants where there are whole cloves in the rice, and I believe one time I had raisins in the rice. Could someone please advise me?

When you cook rice in the microwave, make sure you use the vessel that is at least twice the size you need (otherwise the water will boil over and make a mess).
