My recently married friend will be setting up home shortly, but as there are no elders on either side for advise, we friends are going to set up her kitchen. But we have no clue as to how to proceed.
What are the basic requirements ( utensils, spices, groceries etc.) and how much will be initially required? Is there any traditional method (Tamilian) of doing these things and any specific food items should be the first preparation?
A list of things needed or any pointers, suggestions will be very very helpful .
With thanks,
Kamakshi.

For a basic Tamil Kitchen, you need a heavy duty mixie and Grinder (if the budget allows).
pressure cooker - for cooking rice, vegetables etc. usually Prestige is preferred.
You can buy a 10 piece set or 12 piece set of SS vessels (Farberware or similar - I have a Farberware set that I have been using for more than 20 years. The good thing is you can cook and serve in the same vessel).
3 piece iron skillet - I use mine for dosas, curries, uppumas and omlets.
Groceries - you can buy the basic dhals, rice, oil. Instant tamarind paste - a heaven sent - reduces the preparation time for sambar, rasam. The product of Thailand tamarind paste has a nicer color. Turmeric powder.
Usually we cook sweet - payasam or rava kesari the first time.
If you need any other tips, let me know.

Thanks a lot Andal, for your quick response. Will consult my friends & let you know, what else we are planning to do. Can you tell what vessels we will get in Farberware set (like adukku, ladles also) and how much approx. will it cost?
