Hello:
This is what I do, to get rid of the smell of cooking, I don't turn off the exhaust fan right after you turn your stove off(I've noticed a lot of my friends doing this and it is one of the main reasons why the house/apartment smells), leave it on for quite a while, it is not going to cost you a fortune to pay for the electricity(I think this is the main reason people trun those fans off right away).
Another thing I do is ALWAYS keep the bedroom/clothes closet doors closed to prevent the smell from sticking to the clothes.

If you visit somebody whose house smells, when you get back home, do not hang/put your clothes in the closet with others, try to wash them right away if you can, I know it's not possible with all kinds of clothes, but, hey, at least with the ones you CAN wash!
Aerate your home, let some fresh air in whenever you get a chance. Do this in the mornings to avoid high temperatures in summer.
Incense/scented candles are a temporary help.
I live in a mid-western state, where it's cold for a few months in a year and I cannot leave the windows open even for shorter periods, but still, the above precautions definitely help.

Don't compare Indian households with the American ones, their cooking is so different as there is NOT a whole lot of "cooking spices in oil" going on.
Remember, any fabric/porous surfaces are the main culprits, they retain the smell. Change clothes when you go out, don't go out with the same ones that you have been wearing while cooking.
Twice a year, get your carpet steam cleaned.
I just follow these simple precautions and there's no smell in our house, buddy.
Have fun.

Also, in a lot of American households, potpourri(a mixture of wood shavings, twigs etc.) is used for the fragrant smell. They are not very expensive and are available in all stores in different fragrances. Try some of those out and see if that helps. But again, potpourri loses the fragrance after a while, so you either have to get a new bag or pour some of the fragrant oil(which can be bought separately in bottles) on top.

Hi,
Usually my kitchen smells of spice/oil right after cooking the food. But after a while, the smell is gone -- bedrooms/closet don't smell at all. There's one more reason I believe -- I don't use fresh onion that often. I use onion flakes or powdered version of it. I also use the available "minced garlic" and not the fresh one. That helps a lot. Besides, I use "air-neutralizer" in our rooms to get rid of smell.

1. Use Febreze on carpets, sofas, etc. which absorb the odors (they even have an air freshener now)
2. try lighting agarbathis..
3. try leaving the door/window open for some time during/after cooking.
