I will ask Mum........
Mum says you get Chow Chow (as it is called) from Chinese shops.
It is their version of Candied Peel/fruits. The pieces are larger and in a (ginger) syrup.

IN addition mum says that the syrup may not be ginger.
Chow Chow is a mixture of various fruits and carrots.

Ceyloni,
If I recall correctly, Chow Chow is a mixture of vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, cabbage etc. that form a relish/pickle. Or maybe there are two differents kinds of "chow chow". One Chinese and the other that I'm familiar with.

No! You've all got it wrong. Chow is a Chinese breed of dog. In England there has been a rumor for some time now that some Chinese resteraunts use dog instead of chicken. So, that's the reason for the name Chow Mein. Maybe.

Bloody hell, I thought chow-chow was otherwise known as Bangalore kathirikkai! Chow in the singular is an outdated american barracks slang for "food".

Doggy chow-chow? HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! I am just kidding. I think I will kill it with my sarcasm.
One Malayalam girl, Christina will be kicking my backside soon. So, I will shut up, for now.

I am not exactly sure what goes into chow-chow preserves, but after many tries, have figured out its function in the SriLankan Xmas cake. It is what makes it so moist. I have made the cake without it, and it tasted fine, but was a bit crumbly. Strawberry jam is a good substitute. If there is a SriLankan grocery store near where you live, they'll probably sell chow-chow preserves in the fall, just in time to start the cake.
