What do you guys think of the Periyar brand pickles from Kerala? They sell it in Indian stores, and it is very tasty, especially the narangya, and manga pickles. Which kind of pickles you like better, Andhra style, Tamil style, or Kerala style?

TSR pickles are the best. The only problem is finding them in the U.S.

To my experience of scientist having been working for 10 years in the field of shrimp, there is no academic difference between shrimp and prawns. People, including researchers specialized in the area, call either shrimp or prawn any of those tasty crustaceans that you can find in freshwater or seawater. Nevertheless, depending on the regions, people are more used to call them either shrimp or prawns. Also, some of them prefer to call prawns the bigger ones but there is no fundamental rule. Best regards and keep on having great time by eating them. Alain Diter
Shrimp or Prawn?
There is often confusion regarding the difference between a shrimp and a prawn. Physically they look very similar but there is one sure way to tell them apart. In shrimps or carideans the side plate of the second segment of the abdomen overlaps the segments in front and behind. Prawns, most of which belong to the family Penaeidae of the group Dendrobranchiata, have all the abdominal side plates overlapping tile-like from the front. A more fundamental difference but one impossible to appreciate in a single specimen is that female prawns do not brood eggs but shed them into the currents where they develop independently. It would therefore make sense to call all member s of the Penaeidae "prawns" and members of the Caridean "shrimps" and this is what most Australians do. King prawns and banana prawns are names understood in this continent for penaeids sold frozen at the markets. The tiny shrimps bought in cans or froz en are imported carideans. Confusion arises when we hear Americans refer to prawns as "shrimp".

Is it possible to distinguish between the males and females? by taste I mean. Someone was telling me a great story of how he caught the restaraunter cheating in India by serving male or female when the other kind was ordered. For the life of me I could not figure out if he was serious or he was just pulling me leg!
