Thanks Hemant & R.
HI R, I will buy it from the stores you said. Is it called averaykai in the stores or do they sell it by another name. Are they in the dry form or regular form. I am asking you these questions because I don't remember exactly how they look. My mom used to make it for us sometime and I entered the kitchen to cook only now. Could you also please tell me the recipes for averaykai with coconut curry, normal + poricha kootu and paruppu usili.

Hello Kavya,
I dont remember the name I saw in the shop because they mention in Hindi. Am trying to recollect, but no luck. Anyway, will go tomorrow for shopping. If I see them, let u know.
It is a fresh veg., and am not talking abt. the frozen one. The color is green and thick(hope we are talking abt. avarai or avaraikai!!).

For paruppu usili, u can see the old responses in the thread "Interesting recipes of broccoli".
For normal kootu, cook the veg., w/w.o 1 handful of channa dhal and a pinch of turmeric.
In a pan, season in oil with mustard, urad dhal, curry leaves. Now, add the veg., with little water and salt.
Grind 2 handfuls of coconut, 2 red chillies and 2 tbsp of jeera nicely. Mix the paste with 1/s handful of rice flour to the kootu , let them boil. Once it is in semi liquid stage, keep aside.
................
For poricha kootu, boil the veg., just like the above. Seasoning are same. For paste, you have to fry 2 red chillies, 2 tsp of jeera,2 tsp of urad dhal, 1 tbsp dhania in little oil and grind with 1 handful of coconut. If u want pepper, u can reduce the qty. of red chilly and add the pepper. But, for this poricha kootu, my mother wont add it.
Once the boiling is done, switch the gas off.
******************
For normal curry, as usual boil the veg., Season in oil with mustard, urad dhal and curry leaves. Now, add the veg., and salt. Once there is no water, add the grated coconut, stir them well. Keep aside.

My mother use to make a diff., version of poricha kootu without coconut. Will ask her and let u know later, ok.
Bye

Hello Kavya,
Avarekai is sold here in the frozen section of almost every Indian grocery store. It is called either surti papdi lilva (I think Deep foods) or valore lilva (Vadilal brand) or in the canned vegetable section. Hope this helps.

hi here is a special curry with avarekai.
steam cook avarekai 2 cups and 1/2 cup masoor dal in a pressure cooker along with some jeera in it.
Next heat a kadai (pan) and add oil, add mustard 1 tsp, and coarsely, fresh pounded black pepper corns (2 tsp) and jeera (1tsp), when it splutters add 1 slit green chilli, corriander leaves, grated ginger (1/2 inch) and asafotedia and turmeric powder, when all this is done well, add the steam cooked dal and avaerkai mixture, liittle water to adjust the consistency and then bring to boil, then simmer and add finely chopped corriander leaf and add 2-3 tsp of fresh lemon juice, serve with chapathis as well as rice, extremely delicious and easy to cook. All best for good cooking,
