HI Sesasri,
How about preparing upuma with crushed wheat -a tasty ,healthy and alternate one.
i am sure u can get crushed wheat in US as we do in UK.
HALF ONION, GREEN CHILLIES 1 OR 2, CARROTS CUT INTO SMALL PIECES(2), TWO AND HALF TUMBLERS OF CRUSHED WHEAT
HEAT OIL IN KADAI AND ADD ALL THESEWITH WHEAT AT THE END.
Boil water beforehand (ratio 2 cups of boiled water for 1 cup of crushed wheat )
add the boiling water , salt and cover the kadai for 8 to 15 minutes. it requires medium flame.
how about trying this easy, fast, healthy receipie .

Hello Sesari!
Here is a recipe of Javvarisi[sabudhana]uppuma from Mallika Badhrinath's cookery book.
Soak 11/2 cup fine sago in one cup of water for 6 to 8 hours. Cook 1/2 cup green gram dhal in boiling water till it is just tender.[each grain should be seperate but soft].Drain the water through a colander. Again squeeze the excess water. Sprinkle 1 tbsp of rice flour to Sago[javvarisi] and seperate the grains. Heat 6tbsps oil in a heavy pan and add 1sp mustard seeds. When it splutters, add 1sp black gram,2sps bengal gram, 1tbsp cashnew nuts, and a few springs curry leaves.Fry on a medium fire and then add 1/2 cup finely cut onions and 7 green chillies[cut lengthwise]. Fry till light brown. Add sago and fry constantly in reduced flame. Cook until the sago becomes completely transparent. Sprinkle 11/4sp salt and mix well. Add the cooked dhal. Mix well for a few minutes. remove from fire, add juice of 1 lemon and mix well. Then add 3tbsps grated coconut and mix well.

for healthier javvarisi uppuma, substitute mung dhal with sprouted moong dhal(mulaikattiya payaru). Then for seasoning, grind the following- coconut pieces, coriander seeds, tofu, red chillies, khas khas.
Decorate it with cut fresh tomato slices.
