  As per my understanding of this form of Japanese poetry, First of all, it is called
  "HAIKU"
  And the meter is 5-7-5
  ie, first and third line must have five letters only and the middle second line to have seven letters only.
  I have composed many HAIKUS in Gujarati over the past thirty years .But not in any other language.

  as i read, the traditional haiku ( from chinese or japanese ?? ) is four line poem..
  first line should start new topic
  second line should explain the property of the topic started
  3rd line should start another new topic
  and fourth line should join all together and give final punch.

  i agree with you but it is for modern haiku
  
  Modern Haiku.
  The history of the modern haiku dates from Masaoka Shiki's reform, begun in 1892, which established haiku as a new independent poetic form. Shiki's reform did not change two traditional elements of haiku: the division of 17 syllables into three groups of 5, 7, and 5 syllables and the inclusion of a seasonal theme.
  Kawahigashi Hekigoto carried Shiki's reform further with two proposals:
  
  
  Haiku would be truer to reality if there were no center of interest in it.
  The importance of the poet's first impression, just as it was, of subjects taken

  I am happy reading your explanation.
  The old measurement , as per Japanese , was it seems too long.
  Japanese wanted to convey more using lesser number of sylables.
  Thus was born the new shorter form.
  This explanation was given to me by Mr.Kotaro Araki , my boss.

  hykoo is a beatiful form of poem. let it be 5-7-5 in origin! But when it is adopted in other language of the numbers need not be a bottleneck, especialy when the beauty in formation and imagination are maintained! What could be told in 5 words can be expressed in 3 words or even lesser than that in crisp languages! Do you agree or what to stick on to 5-7-5 and manufacture poems?
