Dear Freinds ,
I am attemting to translate some of Bharathiyars Poems from tamil to English and I hope it will be helpful Knowing others about some south indian Saints and the beauty of Tamil poems
Looking wealth for day to day living,
Babbling meaningless stories and
Concerned about the suffering.
Pain in the Heart,
Harming others
In selfish desire.
Aging in agony then
The Death takes over in vain.
Like the ones above, some ignorant people,
Bharathi is not going to loose this battle
-Bharathi
Can any one provide me some english translation of Bharathi Songs???? or can help me in translation?
Regards
Imthiyaz

I have been trying to translate some of Bharatiyar's poems into English. I want to present them with the original Tamil text, a romanized transliteration, and the meaning in English. It's very hard work for me, very slow going. I've only done a couple so far. Please have a look:
http://sites.netscape.net/penkatali1
I'm most interested in his Shakti poems. Right now I'm trying to translate "Om cakti" and "caktik kUttu" (Dance of Shakti). The latter is especially difficult to render in English because of the way it plays with the rhythm of the Tamil language, the way the words gradually emerge from the percussive dance rhythms of the Tamil syllables.
I believe in the extraordinary spiritual power and beauty of Bharatiyar's poetry helping to make the world a better place. If you would like to help me with translating these poems, please let me know. mika nanRi

This is as close I could get to Bharati's
------------------------------------------
Akkinik kunjondru kandaen
Athai angoru kattior pondhidai vaitthaen
Vendhu thanindhathu kaadu
Thazhal veeratthil kunjendrum mooppendrum undoe?
-----------------------------------------
A flamelet of a fire I see;
In a forest tree's hollow I stow;
The forest burns down to dust;
Flames are brave, mature or not.
peNkaLai kAtalippavanae, uthavikku naanundu. Naan uthavatthakkavana endruthaan theriyavillai. (For donna's convenience, just in case, 'O Lover of Women, there's me to help; whether I'm suitable to help is the looming question')
I saw only you "kummi". And I think rhythm, which is one major element that gives a jaunty flavour to Bharati's poems, esp. the "kummi", is conspicuously missing in your english translation.
Donna, too bad I missed out on you fellas in 'friendship'. Things are happening too fast there for me to follow.

Thanks for your offer to help, O Roop. I may call upon you to take up your offer. I have moved my page to a new site. Here is the new address:
http://www.penkatali.org/bharati.html
The translation of the kummi, I agree, is very unsatisfactory. I did not do that translation but found it on another web site. So far the only translation I did myself is of the poem "peNmai". I want to do my own translations of Bharati but need more time to work on them.

I am giving below the three poems from among the many of the most beautiful creations of Bharati
On limitless pleasures
“Eththanai Kodi Inbam Vaiththai Engal Iraiva Iraiva Iraiva Oh!”
(How many crores of pleasures you have given us Oh our Lord ..Lord Oh Lord)
“Chiththinai Achiththudan Inaiththai Anghu Cherum Imbudhathin Viyanulagamaiththai”
(You have created knowledge and ignorance together and in that creation of yours you have set the wonderful beauty in all those five basics Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Sky)
“Aththanai Ulagamum Vannak Kalanjiam Ahap pala pala Nallazhugagal Amaiththai”
(That world in its entirety is a beautiful and colourful collection So you have made it in many splendors)
“Mukthi Enroru Nilai Samaiththai Athil Muzhuvathaiyum Unarum Unarvu Amaiththai”
(You have set Salvation as the final level and in achieving that you have made me realize every thing that is perceivable)
“Bhakthi Enroru Nilai Vaghuththai Engal Parama Parama Parama “
(You have also set devotion as another route Oh our Almighty !)
On fear of death
Bharati also challenges Yama (the lord of death) as under
“Kaala Enn Kaalaruge Vada Sarrte Unnai Mithikkiren”
(Oh Yama !Will you come near my foot ! I shall just step over you)
Let us come over the fear of death and enjoy till the end
Demand to Lord Ganesh
The great poet also writes about the boon he demands from Lord Ganesh the foremost God every one approaches before commencing any activity
“ Enakku Vendum Varangalai Isaipen Nee Kelai Ganapathi”
( Oh Ganapathi ! Will you listen to my requirement of Boons)
“Manadhil Sanchalam Illaamal En Mathiyil Iruley Thonramal”
(With out having any of the anxieties and with out the darkness encompassing my mind)
“ Naan Ninaikkum Pozuthu Nin Mouna Nilai Vandhida Nee seyal Vendum”
(When ever I desire at that moment you shall give me your state of silence-Nirvana)
“Kanakkum Selvam , Nooru Vayathu , Evaiyum Thara Nee Kadavaye”
(Till such time I desire the state of yours it is your duty to give me the heavy material world and 100 years to enjoy )

PRAYERS TO THE ULTIMATE
(ninnai charaNadainthEn, kaNNammA..
a poem by Mahakavi Bharathiar. If anyone wants transliteration of the Tamil poem, pls
tell. I will post later.)
-- A modest translation --
I surrender to thee, the Ultimate
I surrender to thee!
Yearn do I for riches, status and fame!
As I do not wish to be eroded by these yearnings..
(I surrender to thee)
Cowardice and fear spread in my heart and
make it their home. To let these perish..
(I surrender to thee)
May my revelling in conceit end here and
may I fulfil what you destined for me.. so
(I surrender to thee)
No more sorrows, no more despair, no defeats!
Will all noble things be nurtured by Love
(I surrender to thee)
I lack wisdom to differentiate the evil from good [Oh mother]
Let nobility prevail and evil perish!
(I surrender to thee)

Dear Friends,
I am a big fan of Mahakavi Bharathiyar.
I request one of you to please give me the lyrics for the Kavithai that comes in the movie Mahanadhi. It starts with "Pirar vazha..." and ends with "...vedikkai manitharai pol naan veezhven endru enninayo". The next verse follows as "Ini pudhiyadhor uyir kondu, madhi thannai thelivaakki....endrum sandhosham kondrirukka chevvai...sandhosham kondrirukka cheivvai".
I have a book but I am not able to find it in there. Hope one of you knows what I am talking about...thanks a lot...
And please give it in english font because my university computers do not support tamil font or its installation...

Hello Friends,
I have been tempted many times to share my thoughts in this exceptional thread. Thanks Imthiyaz for this tribute to the great poet Barathi. Apart from the beauty of poems, there are some hidden pearls in that ocean.
Whenever I feel a bit unnerved, I get impetus by reading his Puthiya Aaathichudi. "Accham Thavir, AAnmai Thavarael..." In the past, I used to think, " Has Barathi adviced only to the boys? Aanmai Thavarael ... seems more masculine.." Later, it dawned to my underdeveloped brain (unfortunately still..!) , that Aanmai is a charecter which Barathi wants everyone to develop. It is "Aaaln- Mai" - more to do with managing the self and the society. Whatever one's role in the society, Barathi insists "Aalumai thavarael". What an advice to give to the younger generation!

Have you heard Manadhil urudhi vendum from "Sindhu Bhairavi". If you haven't you can listen to it on raaga.com or musicindiaonline.com .Ilayaraja has scored splendidly and Yesudas has sung beautifully.
