mahabali in kerala

According to hindu mythology Parashurama the sixth avatara of lord Vishnu annihilated 21 Kshatriyas and wanted a place to perform his penance. The gods offered to give him a land of his choice. Parashurama hurled his axe over the sea and asked the sea to retreat over the area covered by the axe, the land emerged from those receding water and this how Kerala emerged.

But the festival of Onam is celebrated in honour of the great King Mahabali who was sent to the pathala by vamana, the fifth avatara of lord siva

So why is Onam celebrated in kerala which did not even exist during mahabalis days
