Is it still prevalent? And what good is dowry if the girl is poor and the man rich? Where did the tradition come from and what does it mean?
Trying to understand because it seems to defeat common sense. The girl leaves her parents to join her in laws and she practically becomes a housekeeper, which she shouldn't pay for...Comon' help me understand.

The concept of dowrey cannot be found in the Vedas. It is an ancient concept taken from the feidal lords of ancient Great Britain where it flourished for ages. Remnants of it may still be practiced in the West but called by different names. Expensive engagement and wedding rings may be an offshoot from the dowrey concept.
