Some of my friends say, having Basmati rice over a prolonged period of time might lead to health concerns, problems in bones, joints, in particular. They prefer Southern varieties (Sona Masoori, Ponni, etc) to Basmati...
Has anyone ever heard of this before? just wondering...And, for guys from North, plse do not take anything against Basmati rice...am just trying to find if there is some truth in this theory.

What kills us most is blindly following the British traditions of taking out all the nutrition in the rice by polishing it first and then taking pills to put back the nutrition in our bodies. Same as with white sugar and white flour. White is such a preffered color that they fear eating anything brown, and we follow them like blind sheep.

From everything I've ever read about nutrition, rice is a healthy food and there is no significant difference between Basmati and other white rices in nutritional content. Brown rice has much higher vitamin levels, but on the other hand, some people do not readily digest it. and don't feel well after eating it.
What is known to be unhealthy is excessive consumption of sweets, as this not only leads to obesity but also to diseases such as diabetes. Deep-fried foods like samosas and puris are not easily digested, and the oil is often rancid and contains "free radicals," which are known to damage cells.
I wouldn't worry about what variety of rice you eat if you cut down on what you shouldn't be doing. The Indian diet, when it concentrates on rice, dal, and a wide variety of vegetables, is a supremely healthy one. And Indian food is one of the great cuisines of the world.
Enjoy...!

I have been eating brown rice everyday for about 5 months - every morning for breakfast along with some fruit. Since December have had achy legs, and very tired legs - can the rice cause some of this problem?
