When and where did bharata natyam originate? Does the name bharata originate from 'bha' ra' ta' signifying bhavaraga and tala or from the word bharat?

Phonetically bhAva-rAga-tAla gives bhArAtA which is not the same as bhArat or bhArata ( or bharat for that matter ). ( note the sounds stress )
( note also natyam should be written as nAtyam )
one interpretation of bhArat can be bhAra-twam or bhAra-dvaj, the weight of some twice born or some thing like that, some thing to do with some illegimate or second birth, not sure
another funnier one is 'bAhar-hat' which translates to get out !

The word "Bharatanatyam" seems to be a recent origin (1900's). Previously it was called "Sadir". After the abolition of the 'devadasi' system, this art was dying. It was the bold, Rukmani Devi Arundale, who resurrected this art. She renamed it "Bharatanatyam" and gave it a mass appeal! Today's 'Bharatanatyam' owes a lot to her.

AT, I think Bharatas Natyasastra ( and many other ancient treatises/nattuvanars ) have as much, if not more to do with classical dance than RDA.

Looks like there there is alot of interpretation on bharatanatya, here is another:-
Bha-ra-tha natyam=
Bha explains Bhava (expression)
ra explains Raga (melody)
tha explains Thala (rythym)
natyam being dance
According to the vedas this dance form was made to man-kind thru Natyaveda, which is said to be the 5th veda.

One of the reasons for the decline of Bharatanatyam is the rigid rules the practitioners are required to adhere to. In comparison, the various regional versions like Mohiniyattam are noted for their flexibility(in the avishkaram of various angas)

This was not decline of bharatnatyam, but devadasi system. As to me i cant imagine bharatanatyam danced naked as in ancient India was. This seems not to be good for movements of bharatnatyam, rspecially it's movements will cause breasts's jumping..
Also not sure that bharatnatyam dancers had sex soon after their dance - was it really so?

anu,
>>One of the reasons for the decline of Bharatanatyam ...<<
Of all the classical dance traditions in India Bharathanatyam has been and still remains the most popular dance form in and outside India. There was never a decline of Bharathanatyam. There was no respect for Bharathanatyam dancers for a few centuries in the history of Tamilnadu but the dance form itself was always patronized and appreciated by the general public.

In Bharat Natyam, female dancers adorn their nose with different varieties of ornaments. Is it necessary to pierce the nose, to become a Bharat natyam dancer? Plz reply me at the earliest
