"From Dr. Nagamanikam Ganesan
From "Nagamanickam Ganesan"
Thanks to some personal communications with Linguists, it is getting clearer.
The island name, "iizham" in ancient Tamil seems to represent the date palm tree "cIntu/iintu/iiJcu",
Kannada "iicalu", ...). Like "karumpeNNai" (= river KrishnavENi) in Andhra after palm tree, or Sind land/region in Pakistan which was named after "date palm" tree, Ceylon("Zeylon") is likely to be named after the date
palm tree also ("iiccam"="iizham"). Palm and Date
Palms were important symbols in ancient India. Cheras' totem symbol is palm trees; Balarama, the Hindu god of agriculture, has a (date) palm and the same as his flag. Balarama holds a goblet to drink palm toddy. (May be after a day's work :-) ). Date palm is "hintAla/hIntAla" in Sanskrit ( < tamil "cIntu"). "

This illustrate that cInthu was a Tamil word for Dates and the fact Tamils held palmyrah/date trees hight in respect. Also it illustrates that they named places after these trees!
so sinthu veLLY anc consequently india are names derived from Tamil. Recongnition of this fact and giving due respect to Tamils would ...:))

THe name of India is a corruption of Hindu. Whereas Hindu is a corruption of Sindhu the name of the river in Punjab. Iranians and mesopotamians found it easy to call the river Sindhu as Hindu. The word Sthan as we call it means place. In those days therwere no religion called Hindu .People living in the region were reffered as Hindus. Pakisthan never refers it as India but as Hindusthan there by denying nationaliy to Indian Muslims.

etymology of the word india:
india derives its origin fm the word indus. the banks of river indus was home 2 the first indian civilization as recorded till date. india also comes fm the word hindu which is = hi + indu. hi is the root word / mool matra shabd for himalayas in sanskrit and indu either means river indus, river sindu or bindu sarover (indian ocean). the word hindu was used (by sumerians, later arabs, persians) 2 signify ppl who lived b/w the stretch of the himalayas and indus river / himalayas and sindu river / himalayas and indian ocean. india is the slanged form of indus + hindu. cInthu / sindu mayb from tamil but references hv bn found suggesting that sumerians definitely referred 2 the ppl of harappa civilization as hindu in terms of ethnicity or place identification (not religion). sumerian till date is believed to be the oldest language in the world predating tamil.
