  i suppose the old testament was a record of historical events just as many ancient eastern "religious" texts are (including parts of the vedas). the semitic / middle-eastern religions call the characters in their books as prophets and eastern religions call them as gods / godesses. jesus was perhaps fed up of social hierarchy discriminations and sought 2 set right the society in which he lived first. since his birth was not really ancient in times as compared to say egyptian, indus valley or southern-indian civilisations, many philosophies that he sought 2 reinforce in ppl had bn expounded bfore his birth.
