i think everyone has forgotten Salil Choudhury,Hemanta Mukherjee,Anil Bagchi and OP Nayyar.Definitely SD is great, if not the greatest.Shanker Jaikishan,Madan Mohan are good but they are not classical composers.Only a Salil Choudhury can compose - It nana mujh se tu pyar bara. To me an alltime list should include this 5 names not necessarily in the order given below
Salil Choudhury - those pahari tunes and juxtaposition with tal and loy
SD - for his superb range which mixed bhatiyali with modern day acccompaniment.Infact one cannot just type a number as typically SD.
Hemanta - his haunting tunes are unmatches. Just by dint of sheer lyricism his songs stand out. Who can forget - aise bhi baat e hoti hai & yeah nayan dare dare.I dont think Ar Rehman can compose such tunes.
Anil Bagchi - the doyen of Hindi music. he was a master of classical music and introduced them to Hindi films.
Pankaj Mullick - the father and guru of all music directors. He intoduced Saigal , Lata and all the legends and even Kishore Kumar.A whole generation of singers from Hemanta to Lata idolised him.

If there is one complete, fast and mind-boogling composer in India, it is none other than Maestro Ilayaraja. He used to record two songs a day (can you imagine). He was the best BGM composer India has ever seen.(Watch Naayakan, Anjali, Geethanjali etc) NO other music dir. has carried so many films to success with his music alone eg: Payanangal mudivathillai, Vetrivizha etc.
IN his peak times he did 50 movies per year. I dont think not even Rahman, nobody will come anywhere near it. Rahman is an excellenrt Music director, but certainly not the best India has seen. But he became famous all over the world.

You have got it wrong - composing and recording are two different things. If you have to record 2 songs a day, you have to write the tune first and then all the different pieces in the orchestra (Flute, Guitar, Violin etc), then ask the orchestra to rehers it and then record. Its not easy like sitting in front of a computer, mixer, synthesizer and then doing it comfortably. Those days, not even tracking was there and most of the Orchestra were recorded in one shot. In such circumstances recording 2 songs per day is indeed a challenging task. Ismail durbar may have composed in 5 minutes, that any MD will do, who has a minimum knowledge in music. But to record 2 songs a day, right from composing till take, not many in the industry can do. I bet that not even Rahman, no new age MD can do that, because no one knews how to conduct an Orchestra.

The so-called great musician A.R.Rahman was invited to conduct symphony in Birmingham symphony orchestra, which is one of the best classical western orchestra group. Rahman was a let down there, because he doesnt know how to conduct a grant orchestra of Violins and Pianos. Western music is not all about Roja or Bombay or Dilse or Thiruda Thiruda.
Conductors like Zubin Mehta have become lgends for this, that they know the tough task of conducting a symphony Orchestra, which Ilayaraja has done twice now and has won the heart of Westerners. But who knows about it, since it was without any publicity? I again stress that Rahman is a great Musician, but dont give more than what he deserves. He has still a lot more to go. In terms of melody, Classical etc Ilayaraja, Salil Chowdhary, RDB are way ahead of Rahman. Can anyone point out a single composition of Rahman which is purely classical based?
