The Hason Raja team
Director
Ruhul Amin is well respected in Britain and Bangladesh for his documentary and feature work, including 'New-Eastenders', 'Movie-Walla' and 'A Kind of English', which was commissioned in the UK by Channel 4 Television, premiered at the London Film Festival and enjoyed critical acclaimed at festivals around the world.
Cinematographer
Anil Mehta is best known for 'Lagaan', a 2002 Oscar nomination and the first Bollywood movie to be recognised by the US Academy. Like many of the cast and crew, Mehta's commitment to the Hason Raja project is as much personal as it is professional or commercial.
Writers
Sayeed Islam is Head of the English Department at Dhaka University and one of the world's foremost authorities on Hason Raja. In collaboration with Salim Aldin, Head of Arts at Jahangir Nagar University and author of many film and play scripts, he has created a powerful script which captures the magic of 'golden Bengal' in the nineteenth century.
Musical Directors
Dr Buphen Hajarick is one of the greatest authorities on Bengali folk music and a household name in Bangladesh.
Choreographer
Soraj Khan is a leading Bombay choreographer whose credits include Hindi hit films Lagon and Dilsay.
The Cast
Mithun Chakraborty (Hason Raja) is a major figure in the commercial world of Bollywood cinema and the alternative Indian art-house scene. As a Bengali, he too brings his own personal passion and commitment to this project, as well as a lifetime's professional experience as a lead actor.
Nandita Das is a young actress with extensive experience in street theatre, dance and puppetry as well as films and television. Her film credits include Parinati, Goonja, Fire, and Peta. She is best known for her part in the popular TV series Husney Jaana.

Mithun makes a comeback

Back to the film: Mithun on the sets of Elaan where he plays a negative role
After a long time now you have signed some films. What are they?
There’s Elaan directed by Vikram Bhatt, then comes Lucky (starring Salman Khan in the lead role) directed by Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao and Raakh directed by Hansal Mehta. In Elaan I am not playing a negative role but rather a negative force, who becomes so due to circumstances.
It’s not a traditional villain-ish role. In Lucky I play Colonel Pindidas Kapoor, an intelligence guy who helps young couples from Russia to escape. It’s about a character who treats the most dangerous of situations lightly. In Raakh I am playing a head of a mafia family, something like a Don Corleone (Godfather). It’s a very powerful and strong character. I am playing the central character in the films that I am doing.
What are the kind of roles that you want?
I want to do only those roles that now excite me, be they be negative, positive or anything. I am bored of doing the same commercial roles that I have done before. Now I want to do roles that are completely different. I am even open to doing crossover or niche cinema.
What had made you stay away from films for so long?
was bored doing the same things over and over again. I had done some roles in parallel cinema, a few Bengali films but basically I found that it was the same thing. I have seen the peak of stardom and the extremes of life. What more can I achieve? There was a time when every Friday I would get fever when my films were released. I was getting obsessive. I wanted to do something more than films…. I didn’t want to die with my shows on….
Why did you shift to Ooty?
My home is Ooty. I love to be near greenery and lead my own life. Also my business interests lay in Ooty (he own the Monarch Hotel in Ooty, the Monarch Safari Park resort in Madhumalai), my children were studying there in my school (Monarch International School), my family was there.
This way I travel all around the world and come back to my homes in Ooty and Coimbatore.
One has heard that you do a lot of charity work in Kolkata?
I never talk about that. I do it because I want to do it.
Mithun Chakraborty has won 3 National Awards for: Mrigaya (1976) Tahader Katha (Bengali — 1993)
Swami Vivekanda (in the role of Ramakrishna Paramahansa — 1995)
Inner circle
Reticent. That’s the word you would use to describe , Mithun Chakraborty. And this is especially so when it comes to his personal life.
