Sweet lad;
So u r a singer as well, cools so am I?
Listen dude, I have never degraded KJY, he is a singer par excellence, & FYI, I love Carnatic music, I have loads of Balamurali Krishna, KJY tapes.
But, we are discussing here about playback singing not about Carnatic concerts, in that case SPB is greater than KJY in PLAYBACK SINGING, while KJY is better than SPB in Carnatic,
After all if a person like KJY is trained in Carnatic, should be better than a person who is not trained in Carnatic like SPB, simple logic right, u can not compare SPB's Carnatic abilities with KJY, cos, SPB is not a Carnatic person.
It’s like comparing computer programmer's programming skills, with a doctor's medical skills, right?
Any way, drop me an email, if u can

Raghu,
"KJY has all those 3 aspects mentioned in abundance, SPB has a lot of those though not as much as KJY",
what do you mean by "SPB has a lot of these though not as much as KJY", r u kidding , man.
SPB's
1. the ability to give shakes, vibrations in the song is unmatcahble, even by KJY
2. Melody in the voice...- softness..at the same time. I agree both are very melodius indeed!
3) Weight in voice, I think u mean the bass & Depth, sorry brother, SPB easily wins over any singer in India in this aspects, just listen to his bass, then u will no what I am talking about.
Oh & northies are insane to compare the likes of KJY, SPB with the nasal sh*t bathroom singers like, Kumar, Sonu, Udit, Sukwindher, he he "
The above were your words if u recognize. They dont say anything in particular about playback singing. You were comparing SPB & yesudas from a vocal potential point of view, in what way is my answer to Mr Bhuvan more deviating from the topic than this ?
1. Now secondly, let me tell you friend, music is music, singers are singers..not like comparing a programmer to a doctor...(poor analogy by you buddy) I was only comparing singers.
2. Please dont try to find excuses by saying SPB hasnt learnt carnatic and so KJY exceeds him in carnatic coz he has lerant carnatic..
First of all SPB has learnt a lot of carnatic music from his own father who is a classical singer, and also from Balamurali..but he could not just get it that much..that is his capability...
Moreover, you seem to say KJY is better then SPB only coz he learnt carnatic, so u mean to say all other carnatic singers are better then SPB ?
No way...
Learning carnatic and not learning only differentiates a person in his abilities to sing classical with that bhaavam, sing those swaraas..
but as far as the voice range, vibrations etc...one has to practice & also have it by birth to some extent ...vibrations & voice range dont come to someone just by learning carnatic.
So in that respect if you compare SPB with KJY, just as pure vocal singers not taking into account any carnatic part...you can see KJY can go to such BASS (lower octaves) which SPB cant just near...and KJY can equal SPB when it comes to higher octaves..so who has more voice range..? u tell me.
when it comes to vibrations in film songs too (not carnatic) you will realize if you are a singer that SPB's vibrations are smooth & nice but they are pretty basic & elementary in standards ( level 1 or max level 2), as compared to KJY's shakes & vibrations which complex (higher levels than 2) and even difficult to even get the flow of those vibrations let alone reproducing them (SPB's vibrations are reproduceable, (I know this by first hand experience)
And with regards to softness , please dont say they are equal...a pucca KJY melody with utmost softness would be beyonfd compare to SPB's melodies which are good, but certainly not as soft!!
KJY can show versatality in what he sings..he could sing a pure carnatic krithi with utmost complexity in sangathis, swaraas, speed..
and also sing a pure light film song with absolutely no tinge of classical music...
and also sing a pure devotionl song that would induce devotion in the person hearing it...with just high class of divinity in his voice...
whereas when SPB sings , all his songs sound same..in the style..i.e film songs or devotional etc...all arelike film songs..he cant produce the difference...
versatality is not just changing voice and singing in double throat and singing like a lady etc..which SPB does often and which is one of his major strength...which KJY cant do..but those aspects more to do with memicry..then actual singing with the original voice...
I COULD GO ON & ON..BUT NOT TIME..
By the way, good to know you are singer too...
Hey I love SPB for his potential..no BIAS here...
but it is true that KJY is definitely a more capable vocalist.
As far as playback singing in films..SPB no doubt has one step higher place to KJY for his mere capability to change his voice according to the person on the screen.
you dint furnish me with ur e-mail id..

sweetlad;
since when DR.SPB was learning classical music from Dr.KJY & Dr.Balamurali Krishna, u must be kidding, I know SPB's father was a carnatic singer, that's all, buddy, I went to SPB & KJY's concert last june here in London, there SPB said, that he would love to learn classical singing From das anna (KJY)!!
hey BTW, what do you think about SPB's performance in "shankarabaranam", can u imagine KJY singing it, he he, his voice would not have suited the character @ all.
KJY is my second fav after SPB, so no offence meant to you or Dr.KJY

Dear Raghu,
this is turning to be a KJY vs SPB thread..slowly..(laughs)...
anyway..if you read my lines again, you can see that I never said SPB learnt carnatic music from KJY as you have claimed.
He learnt carnatic music from his father and also from Balamurali..(to sing for Sankarabharanam).
Now..in your reply you have only conveyed about your opinion saying SPB is your fav before KJY etc..well fine, that is your likes..
but our discussion is not about personal likes & dislikes..it is about who is better between SPB & KJY.
"hey BTW, what do you think about SPB's performance in "shankarabaranam", can u imagine KJY singing it, he he, his voice would not have suited the character @ all. "
The above wods in quotes were yours..
As far as KJY's voice suiting the 'old man' in Sankarabharanam, true he cant suit it..and I already mentioned that in my previous response...
I said SPB is more capable in changing voices to suit the person on the screen. No questions about that. But KJY is not to be underestimated in voice changing capabilities..it is just that it was not made use of in Tamil songs...sung by him.
If you listen to his work in Malayalam, you will se that he has done some beautiful vioce transformations...anyway ..
But I still dont find you deferring/discussing on the specific aspects & singing capbalities that I mentioned in detail in my previous response.
I am sure you see fariness in the same.
As I mentioned, SPB certainly has a upper hand when it comes to playback singing but when it comes to 'singing' there is no comparision buddy!
As far as SPB in sankarabharanam, it is great work indeed for a non learnt person, but it is not great in carnatic standards. Everybody knows this. There were no complex Aalaaps, not much tough voice work/vibrations or sangathis,
but there was a lot of emotion and life in the songs..which SPB is know to give ...that is a nice talent he has there.
anyway..let me not bore you, what is ur e-mail?

Pathmabhushan Dr.K.J. Yesudas, is one of the best singer in India, because of his ability, admitt the truth or ask someone who knows about music there answer will be KJY, I am positive about that, KJY was the disiple of the great Chembai and he said he is still learning Carnatic Music, now he is 64 years old, man think about at this age his voice so beautiful, even SPB is the great fan of KJY, i think last KJY award goes to SPB for his outstanding performance.. There is no need to compare, or if you want compare, please compare with musical facts like "sweetlad" already mentioned, don't say i like SPB beacuse i like his songs or he is greater than KJY....
In carnatic music my point of view, there is lot of Carnatic musicians
1. Shankarn Namboothiri
2. K.J. Yesudas
3. Balamurali Krishna
Are the bests..........
For filim music KJY,SPB and Chitra(Southindian Nigthingale) Are the bests..........

Rafi and Kishore were the best. Again its a North Indian trait that you Southies can't comprehend.
Stick to your Yesudas, SPB and Chitra crap.
Rafi, Kishore, Lata and Asha are god compared to your South Indian monkey crap vocalists.
