Most films showing Mohanlal as a rough guy with twisted moustache have been great hits..Devasuram, Aram Thampuran, Spadhikam, (Usthad, Chenkol), Narasimham..any others? And his forthcoming ventures like Ravanaprabhu, Chakram, Praja all have him in almost the same style..Is he somehow steorotyped or just a coincidence that all those hit movies had good story lines..(I still have to see Narasimham)..

  Jacky, that is only a recent trend... athu kaalathinu anusaricha oru maattam ennu njan parayatte... and it is not a formula for a success.... lal movies like, kireedam, chithram, kilukkam, januvary oru orma, thaalavattom....... does not have twisted moustache... even now if anyone can come up with a movie like this it will also be a hit....like chandralekha..

  Nowadays mohanlal's comedy roles are not upto the mark when compared to his old comedy movies. His comedy performances in recent films like Ayaal Katha ezhuthukayanu, Chandralekha, Kakkakuyil etc. are not good as his performances in Nadodikaatu, Sanmanass..,Mukunthetta.., Gandhinagar..,vellanakalude nadu, chitram etc.
  I think his size is restricting him to do natural comedy performances. His main plus point to shine in comedy roles was his innocent face and that is no more to him now. Now he is good in negative roles like Devasuram, aaram thampuran, sphadikam etc.

  Vince, I thought usthad was a hit movie..although not a typical Sibi Malayil movie, it has left the marks of its Screenwriter Ranjith in the film..sad that Sibi is directing 2nd rate films as his ace writer Lohitadas is slowly becoming independent..

  In my view the main drawback for mohan lal’s comedy scene currently is his voice. The change of his voice made him like that. I believe that only Chandralekha was released after his change of voice, I mean in comedy category. Second one is Kakka kuyil. Nowadays it is very hard to accept him in comedy roles.

I too agree that he is not doin comedy like the old days. about sterotyped mohan lal movies, "ee parakkum thalika" thodangiya super hit padam kandal aarum parayum, ethra stereo type aayalum veendilla randu mohan lal padam meesa pirichu irakkiyal mathiyennu. kaaranam ithrakkum vrythiketta oru padam naattil super hit aayi.   i fully agree that he has of late fallen a victim to his own image created in narasinham & other such films . he has also lost his timing so essential in doing comedy. of late he is shouting a lot while doing comedy. the suttle modulations in his voice which used to send audiences int pits of laughter is no longer seen/heard. he is too loud these days. his voice seems to lack emotion. he looks old and tired as well.his comic timing seems to be gone forever.

  the main factor for lal's fall in comedy scene is his new voice. the voice is also not flexible. i think he will reduce the fat.

  Ustaad, first of all, i didnt really like the film. Pinne all the recent Sibi malayil films, seem really boring, Devadhoodhan. Summer in Bethleham, had a lot of boring parts, Ustaad was boring at times. Sibi malayil, i believe is the stock theerna director. He seems, to drag all his movies, at parts.
  I believe kamal is the best director in present malayala cinema.

  Ustaad and Olympian Antony Adam were released almost at the same time, in Kerala. yet Ustaad went on to be an almost super hit, and olimpian was only a just a very minor hit. i thought Olympian was a way better film than Ustaad. at the time in Kerala, the general talk was that Olympian was a hit because of lalletans fame..... after watching both movies i felt that Ustaad was a hit because of lalletans fame... what do you all think about these two movies ?

  I really like Mohanlal's older movies - both comedies and serious ones. A lot of movies he has acted in recently have not been in the same class. Apart from Ustaad and other movies already mentioned in this thread , I also did not like Varnapakittu and The Prince - this image of a rich city guy in "modern" clothes (yuck!)does not suit his personality at all especially when we compare it to characters he has played in the past in Varavelppu, TP Balagopalan etc. Average working class man-inda imagne nalla chercha aayirunnu.   Ustad was a crap film without doubt but it had some nice moments too. Like the scenes when mohanlal marries off his sister(divya unni). The dialogues in this situation were so touching and realistic.

  Malini - I have to agree with you. As one of his female fans, I prefer watching movies in which Mohanlal plays a 'Nadan' guy wearing the Mundu and shirt rather than a westernized character (with pants, cell phone, sunglasses etc etc :)).

  mohanlal no matter what is the best actor in kerala. he has won so many awards. he had some flops like prince, but who doesn't. he has been in this business for over 20 years.
  few good moives are narashimham, arram thampuran, devasuram, spadikam, naddodikattu, kiridam, chenkol, kalapani.
